And The Winner Is… – Inside No.9 Series 4 Episode 5 – The DVDfever Review

And The Winner Is

And The Winner Is… is the fifth episode of Inside No.9 Series 4, and it centres around Jury No.9, who have to decide on the winner for Best Actress for a forthcoming TV awards ceremony.

Those making the decision are West End star Paula (Zoe Wanamaker),screenwriter Clive (Reece Shearsmith), whose best days are behind him, up-and-coming director young Gordon (Noel Clarke), journalist June (Fenella Woolgar), critically-acclaimed thespian Rupert (Kenneth Cranham) and member of the public, Jackie (Phoebe Sparrow), who didn’t know Marie Curie was a real person and thought she was a magazine.

They’re chaired by Giles (Steve Pemberton) who, at one point, despairs quietly about the latter, “Well, that’s what happens when you invite members of the public(!)”

This is because tempers begin to fray as the discussion heats up over one of the four up for the award, and there’s also asides about how if actresses want to be known as ‘actors’, why is there still a Best Actress category? Plus, there’s always some people who get nominated simply for turning up (eg. in my view, Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand)

Overall, And The Winner Is… is not brilliant, but it’s amusing and a bit silly, and certainly a lot lighter than the previous episodes in the series.

And The Winner Is… is available to watch on BBC iPlayer for 30 days after broadcast.

Inside No.9 Series 4 is available to pre-order on Blu-ray and DVD, ahead of the release date of February 12th.
