Cold in July and Chef lead the new cinema releases & trailers – w/e June 27th 2014

cold-in-julyThis weekend there are five new films out for you to choose from: a thriller in Cold in July, comedy in Chef and A Haunted House 2, musical singing in Walking On Sunshine, and godknowswhat in Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie.

Cold in July

Cold In July, a noir thriller set in 1989, stars Michael C. Hall as Richard Dane, a man who has a life-changing moment when a burglar breaks into his house and he kills them. The burglar is the son of a convict, who’s just out of jail, and Dane has to protect his family from the poop that’s about to hit the fan when the ex-con comes calling.

Directed by Jim Mickle and also starring Sam Shepard, Don Johnson and Vinessa Shaw, Hall is an incredible actor as proved in Six Feet Under, then Dexter – but not in Gamer!

Now, I would love to have seen this at my local Odeon, but hardly any of them are showing it! Meanwhile, they have oodles of screens for most of the crappier films below.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

Chef

Chef features Jon Favreau – who also writes and directs – as Carl Casper, a chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.

Also starring Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Sofía Vergara, John Leguizamo, Dustin Hoffman, Amy Sedaris, Bobby Cannavale, Oliver Platt and Garry Shandling, this is a superb cast and looks like a fantastic movie to boot.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

A Haunted House 2

A Haunted House 2 is the sequel to, obviously, last year’s A Haunted House.

This time round, having exorcised the demons of his ex, Malcolm is starting fresh with his new girlfriend and her two children. After moving into their dream home, however, Malcolm (Wayans) is once again plagued by bizarre paranormal events

Also starring Kirsty Hill, Jaime Pressly, Ashley Rickards, Essence Atkins, Dave Sheridan and Cedric the Entertainer, A Haunted House 2 was released in the US on April 18th and is now out here, but seems to be struggling for cinema screenage. Then again it does look like one of those spoof films where all the best bits are in the trailer.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

Walking on Sunshine

Like Mamma Mia, showing weekly on ITV2, and the more recent Sunshine on Leith, Walking on Sunshine is another load of happy people jumping about to popular music tunes. It makes me want to scream.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie

Like the TV series, the trailer is a pile of shit. End of. As such, instead of a trailer, I present to you, a video where you can watch paint dry. It lasts ten hours.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!
