Cucumber, Banana, Tofu – Channel 4, E4 and 4OD – Trailers – Thursday 22nd Jan

cucumber-c4Cucumber is the first in “a new kind of threesome” of dramas from Queer as Folk creator Russell T Davies, starring Vincent Franklin and Cyril Nri (right), plus Freddie Fox and Coronation Street‘s Hayley Cropper, aka Julie Hesmondhalgh.

It focuses on a group of middle-aged gay friends and former activists in the Manchester gay scene, and will premiere on Channel 4 on Thursday at 9pm, and is then followed by Banana (E4, 10pm), which features younger characters on the periphery of the Cucumber narrative.

Third, comes Tofu, on 4OD – an online guide to gay sex.

The three names reference a urological scale categorising the male erection by hardness from tofu to cucumber and, in the show’s universe, will symbolise the levels of sexual attraction between characters.

Personally, I thought Queer as Folk was superb, while Davies made a complete mess of his scripts with Doctor Who because he can’t write sci-fi to save his life. Here’s hoping he’s back to his best, but the fact that the trailers have been on way too often suggests that it may not be fantastic…

Below, you can see a trailer which covers all three series, a teaser for all three, then a specific one for Cucumber.
