The Last Guardian – E3 2015 Trailer – Playstation 4

the-last-guardianThe Last Guardian was proudly announced by Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida, at E3, as a game due for release in 2016, and which I thought looked very ICO-like, and I was hoping for that to be the reveal, but while it isn’t, it looks as near as dammit and absolutely blew me away. Given that it’s developed by Team Ico, designed and directed by Fumito Ueda, and is expected to share stylistic, thematic, and gameplay elements with his previous titles, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. So, why didn’t we get any sequels to those? I would’ve loved that.

The game features a young boy who befriends a giant bird/dog-like creature, Trico, and they have to work together to evade guards that are after the pair of them. The game requires the player, controlling the boy, to manipulate Trico like a real animal, such as luring it with food, as to use the creature as a means to climb and reach high platforms or other remote places. This sets the core of the game on puzzle-based action, as in between the various puzzles the player will encounter, enemies will be encountered, potentially impeding progress. It is the player’s role to survive in such an occurrence, much like in Ico.

The Last Guardian, aka Hitokui no Ōwashi Trico in Japan, was originally due out for release on PS3, having been in development since 2007, but has been put back over the years,
