Will the Xbox 720 Surface be a next-gen tablet controller?

Xbox 720It has been rumoured that the Xbox 720 will come complete with a tablet device called Xbox Surface.

A new leaked document suggests that Xbox Surface will consist of a stationary computing device and a tablet computer. The device will apparently feature a 7″ multi-touch LED screen with a resolution of 1280×720, as well as two IBM POWER7 SCMs, each with six active cores. It will also feature a custom 28nm AMD GPU, as well as a 250GB optical disc drive, which can be expanded via USB flash memory.

The original Microsoft Surface was a table-top product built by Samsung and Microsoft, aimed at businesses and education, featuring a 40″ display with a resolution of 1920×1080, with which Xbox Surface makes it possible for groups of people to share, interact and collaborate on the touchscreen.

Another Xbox 720 leak suggests the upcoming console will support cutting-edge 3D technology through Kinect 3D Glasses, codenamed Fortaleza. This service will be implemented over Wifi in 2014 & via 4G the following year.

Kinect 2.0 will reportedly launch with the Xbox 720, featuring improved tracking and dedicated processing, and with better play space and high definition, although quite frankly, I’d rather just have a great library of suitable games as the existing ones are far from great.

The console is supposedly six times more powerful than the Xbox 360 and will include a Blu-ray optical drive as well as “always online” technology. Erm… mine is anyway, when I use it.

The leak also rumours that the Xbox 720 and its Kinect 2.0 sensor will be released in 2013, priced at a surprisingly low $299 (£190). Then again, that’ll mean it’s £299 in the UK 🙁
