Elly Roberts reviews
Parlophone (EMI)
Bless her. Shes had a horrendous 12 months. Bouncing back in inimitable fashion, Kylie releases a 2 disc set of her Homecoming show from Australia.
Given a rapturous reception by her Sydney fans, it was recorded on November 11th2006, as the diminutive pop star pulled out all the stops to show shes stillable to cut the mustard – and how.
Adopting a thematic approach, songs are blocked into visual titles such asShowgirl, Everything Taboo, Samsara, Athletica, Dreams, Pop Paradiso, DanceOf The Cybermen and Encore, where, needless to say, there must have beenendless costume changes, even though they had no real significant relationshipwith the songs just an exercise in showmanship, which this concert is allabout al la The Greatest Hits Tour.
For her part, Kylie engages at all levels, even if the presentation issomewhat clinical and robotic, though it must be said it fits the format well. Her romp through predicable career spanning hits is at a blistering pace. Most are in the original song format, with exception of Better The Devilwhich has a symphonic build-up, naturally, as it opens the show.
Highlight of CD1 are a Scissor Sisters composition White Diamond(possibly a new single?) and the storming Kids featuring her friendBono of U2, lasting a thumping six minutes, with the crowd going nuts as theyduet perfectly.
Theres more variety of pace on CD2, which kicks-off with a surprising, andsuperb, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, as we get to hear Kylie give ashow-stopping rendition of the Wizard Of Oz classic. Its rare we get hearher actually letting rip.
It takes sometime to get into party mode on disc 2, but it arrives with astorming I Believe In You, and a mind-blowing Cant Get You Out OfMy Heade. Closing her show, Love At First Sight rounds off whatmust have been a highly emotional experience as she thanks her backroom stafffor they efforts in making it happen, all over again.

Elly Roberts passed away in 2011, but he was a man who was so passionate about all types of music and loved meeting his musical heroes, such as Mick Hucknall at a book signing at the Trafford Centre, Manchester in 2007.
A former teacher and also a music journalist, DJ and radio presenter on local community station Calon FM, plus appearances on BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Radio 2, Elly started doing reviews for DVDfever.co.uk in 2004 and he did the majority of the CD and concerts reviews on the website.
I know also that he loved getting away for the summer to Spain and I hope that wherever he is now he is enjoying the hot sunshine and, as one of his friends has said on his Facebook page, that he is interviewing his musical heroes.
