Due to impending fatherhood, Mick Hucknall chose to do an exclusive one-offshow at Manchesters Life Cafe on Saturday 3 February, followed by a sold outsix night residency at the Albert Hall in May.
Lifting tracks from a range of albums, this is a walk in the park for theblue-eyed soul boy from Manchester.
Kicking-off with Soul Theme, the band plays a souped-up jazzy intro withoutHuckers its the build-up of course. Its impressive, especially IanKirkhams sax solo, and the crowd loved it. Its the best opening of the 13shows Ive seen since 1987.
A couple of stick clinks and theyre into The World And You Tonight withMick casually making his entrance. Predictably, the crowd go nuts. Its clearthe voice is still in great shape, and the bands hot too. A relaxed Mickdelivers, “Thank you very much. Good evening. Welcome to the wonderfulRoyal Albert Hall on a Saturday night. Its quite posh isnt it? Are youfeeling posh? A little bit posh, got your best clothes on? Your dapperclothes. Hey, Ive got another bit of news for yall… this is being recorded,so you can really show off.”
A grinning Mick went on, “You can be celebrities. Isnt that great? Wereall celebrities these days. Its wonderful. So hey celebrities come with meon this journey…”
So Beautiful, a tribute to Lou Reeds Walk On The Wild Side bringsloud cheers. Its followed by an poignant and emotional introduction toFor Your Babies”. “And on the very subject of beautiful things, forsome reason this song has a particular relevance to me right now.” – Thetender observational ballad (about all around having children except him inthe ’90s) is sublime.
“The World And You Tonight”
The only time Hucknall embraces a guitar is for signature tune Holding BackThe Years, so we know whats coming, and its the best yet, with the fansjoining in, they raise the roof once again. They didnt need much egging onbut he says .. “Come on”, and they do. Unusually, he uses another onefor Ronnie Laines Debris from Stay.
Firing on all cyliders, Oh! What A Girl turns into a Latino romp magnifique:theyre on their feet now. The partys started and theyre gong for it, withmulti-camera angles catching it all. They storm through hits Thrill Me, Stars,Sunrise, Moneys Too Tight and theyre off to a massive ovation. Back formore, they launch into Fairground, their only chart topper. Penultimatesong Something Got Me Started is the best version to date.
“Ill give it up for you…” is a kind of indicator of the looming endof SR. He leaves them on a high: If You Dont Know Me By Now rings aroundthe magnificent venue, helped by 4,000 fans.
Yet another glorious night for the greatest pop singer Britain has ever produced.
On the extras we get exclusive interview and rehearsal clips along withthree songs from Amsterdam.
For lovers of great music.

Elly Roberts passed away in 2011, but he was a man who was so passionate about all types of music and loved meeting his musical heroes, such as Mick Hucknall at a book signing at the Trafford Centre, Manchester in 2007.
A former teacher and also a music journalist, DJ and radio presenter on local community station Calon FM, plus appearances on BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Radio 2, Elly started doing reviews for DVDfever.co.uk in 2004 and he did the majority of the CD and concerts reviews on the website.
I know also that he loved getting away for the summer to Spain and I hope that wherever he is now he is enjoying the hot sunshine and, as one of his friends has said on his Facebook page, that he is interviewing his musical heroes.
