2016's Gods of Egypt 2016’s Gods of Egypt is The Fourth-Most Watched Film on Netfix Right Now

Even though Gods of Egypt came out in 2016, it’s since found a new lease of life on Netflix. It’s the fourth-most-watched film on the charts, with fans loving the theme and all-star cast. With Chadwick Boseman, Gerard Butler, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, it looks like the movie has finally found its footing.

The Rise of Ancient Egypt on Netflix

In 2016, Alex Proyas, who is known for The Crow, Dark City, and I, Robot, released a movie called Gods of Egypt. The movie saw Gerard Butler playing Set, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Horus. Even though the movie was a flop when it was released on DVD and Blu-ray, nearly ten years later, it looks to have finally found its audience.

Even though it cost $140 million to make, it returned just $31 million at the domestic box office, Netflix has given it a new lease of life, and since then, it’s achieved critical acclaim.  Netflix getting the rights to the movie is no surprise either, especially when you look at the documentaries they have about Egypt.

They include The Lost Pyramid and Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb. Outside of Netflix, we are also seeing a rise in Egyptian podcasts, including The History of Egypt, which is available on Spotify. In gaming, Egyptian themes are also seeing a rise in popularity. Take the Eye of Horus slot game, for example. This features bright Egyptian symbolism as well as the god Horus, which contributes to free spins and expanding wilds. Titles like this help to show how Egypt has helped to create a cultural environment that can be explored freely in the media, in a multitude of different forms.

With viewers primed by documentaries, movies, and even podcasts, it’s no surprise to see that Gods of Egypt has taken off, and over a decade later, it’s finally getting the recognition that it deserves.

What is the Movie About?

The Gods of Egypt movie is told from the perspective of Bek, who is played by Brenton Thwaites. He’s a thief who allies with Horus, but at the same time, works for Set’s architect. They make the decision to steal some secret plans, which ends up sending them on a course of traps and obstacles. There is, of course, a lot of drama, which includes a battle with Ra and Apophis, who is the god of darkness.

With Chadwick Boseman playing Thoth, who is the god of wisdom, it’s not hard to see why this movie is getting so big now. There are lots of big characters, and it may be a simple case of it simply being released ahead of its time. Within the movie, there are also flying scarabs, which, although it takes away from the realism, does help to create a more unique take on a classic theme. Although it may be difficult to say that Age of Gods is an essential movie, it really deserves to have a spot on your DVD shelf. If you do decide to stream it, then you can watch it on Netflix, but at the same time, it’s also out on DVD and Blu-ray.
