Bet centres around high-school girl Yumeko (Miku Martineau – Kate), a compulsive gambler, who’s caught playing poker in detention, but amongst everything she’s been up to in life, she gets expelled, and sent to St Dominic’s Prep School, where the most despicable people go…
However, everyone here also plays poker, and no-one’s heard of the ‘safer gambling’ that’s promoted by some of the big companies when they advertise, or how to “sit this one out”. As such, she even bets $10,000 that her new roommate, Blake Summers (Emma Elle Paterson), will swap beds by the end of the day, as new girl likes to sleep by the window.
This school has a very tribal society, with a school hierarchy where Kira (Clara Alexandrova) is the lead Jennie Garth… Well, had of School Student Body Council. This situation leads to some very daft and OTT moments – including how established member of said Council, Mary (Eve Edwards), beats Ryan (Ayo Solanke) in their chose game, so he becomes her house pet, the lucky thing!
Soon after, when Yumeko, when she goes against Mary, she plays Skirmish, where out of the 7 cards each of them is dealt, as they go head to head, the one with the most wins is the… yes – you guessed it – the winner.
The second episode takes on the game of Icebreaker, in which you have to keep your heart rate down, while your opponent just makes up shit about you, which seems remarkably childish, and I’m beginning to wonder just when anyone actually starts doing any work at this school? And where are the teachers? Or are they all in some alternate universe?
Along the way, Yumeko – playing it so prim and proper – has a reason for her carefree, chaotic behaviour, as you’ll find out; plus, despite there being a uniform at this school, they all seem free to interpret it any way they want; and, as highlighted by Suki (Ryan Sutherland), why do Gen Z talk about “spilling the tea” instead of the “spilling the beans“?
Add in some amusing lines in there, such as the exchange in the girls’ dorm room, below, and Bet is quite fun to watch, but also highly improbable, and does rather go on a bit, inbetween the actual betting games.
- Blake: “Chad’s coming over later to help me practice my fingering.”
Yumeko: “Does he know you’re talking about the clarinet?”
