Brighton Rock starring Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough, Helen Mirren & John Hurt
Adapted from Graham Greene’s brilliant 1939 novel, Brighton Rock charts the headlong fall of Pinkie, a razor-wielding disadvantaged teenager. Screenwriter Rowan Joffe’s debut feature Brighton Rock embraces the classic elements of film noir and the British gangster film to tell the story of Pinkie, a ruthless and ambitious youth who is hell bent on clawing his way up through the ranks of organized crime.
The year is 1964 and the once quiet seaside town finds itself the scene of mass riots as tribes of Mods and Rockers clash in a groundswell of youth rebellion. The established order is changing and Pinkie seizes the chance to make his mark. When a young and very innocent waitress, Rose, stumbles on evidence linking him to a revenge killing he senses the threat of the death penalty looming and he sets out to seduce her to secure her silence. However he reckons without the formidable Ida Arnold (Helen Mirren), Rose’s boss, and her unrelenting quest for justice, which pushes Pinkie to the brink, and Rose into mortal peril.
Brighton Rock features two generations of Britain’s finest acting talent, Sam Riley (Control and the forthcoming On The Road) and Andrea Riseborough (Never Let Me Go and the forthcoming W.E) as the lovers, and Helen Mirren (The Queen), John Hurt (The Elephant Man) as Rose’s self appointed guardians.
