Caught Stealing takes us back to 1998, where Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) lives in the Lower East Side of New York… although it didn’t state New York, so the UK audience has to make that assumption.
Come on, Darren Aronofsky, I got a D for GCSE Geography, around 400 years ago, and I didn’t think I’d have to be using it again all this time later. Still, kudos for gathering a trio of Elvis, Catwoman and The Doctor all in one film.
After a night with his girlfriend, Yvonne (Zoë Kravitz – The Batman), the next morning, after apartment block neighbour Russ (Matt Smith) has gone away back to London for however long, two skinheads turn up to remonstrate with him because he has something that they want, but end up taking their frustration out on Hank, as he erroneously gets involved and comes off worse as a result.
Also kicking up a stink over whatever’s being hidden are “The Hebrews”, Lipa and Shmully – a well-hidden Liev Schreiber and Vincent D’Onofrio, respectively – two baddies who really don’t have a care who gets in the way of their bullets, friend or foe!
Meanwhile, Hank’s having traumatic flashbacks to a serious car crash, at an earlier point in his life, when a friend died, and on it goes with several more characters coming into the proceedings, some good and some bad, but can Detective Roman (Regina King) help Hank out of this mess?
As the bullets start flying, what’s most refreshing is that this is a solid and very unpredictable caper, so it’s great to see something different for a change, and everyone involved gets some decent screen time and puts in their all, delivering big-time on a mere $40m budget.
It’s just a shame that, to date, it’s only taken $15m at the box office!
NOTE: There mid-credits scenes, as well as something during the credits. Check out the video below.
Caught Stealing is in cinemas now, and is available to pre-order on 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD.
