In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, pickingout the Top 10 first. During 1999, I’ll be going through the list one by onestarting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.
This week : 13 new entries, 1 climbers, 4 non-movers & 22 downers.CHART TIME !
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
13 new entries :
However, if this really has sold so badly then it serves him right becauseit’s just the same as “Mambo No.5”, but with place names instead of girls’names.
47 Bryan Adams – The Best of Me45 Enrique Iglesias – Rhythm Divine
43 Thunderbugs – It’s About Time You Were MineOh dear. All of these have had recent hits in the Top 10, but now areperforming so badly they’ve failed to grace the Top 40. 32 TLC – Dear Lie
31 The Charlatans – My Beautiful FriendThese two have had big hits in the past, but perhaps the party’s over? 17 Tom Jones & Cerys Matthews – Baby It’s Cold OutsideCover version from the two Welsh people, but it’s pretty poor. 14 Queen & David Bowie – Under Pressure (Remix) :O ===I love the original, even if a bar of music was taken out when thetrack was transferred onto the “Greatest Hits II” album.
This new version is a dire remix that does nothing for the original, appears on the cheap cash-in “Greatest Hits III” which is arag-tag and bobtail collection of leftovers, and must have Freddieturning in his grave.
13 B*Witched feat. Ladysmith Black Mambazo – I Shall Be There :O ===After having four No.1s in a row with their first four singles, andthen not doing so with the lacklustre “Jesse Hold On”, this new tracksounds like an incredibly dull compilation of everything we’ve heardfrom them to date. 8 Len – Steal My Sunshine *Brilliant dance track which feels like it’s been around for weeks, andI’ve certainly heard it a fair few times. 4 William Orbit – Barber’s Adagio For Strings :O ===One of my favourite pieces of classical music ever is Samuel Barber’s AdagioFor Strings. You know the one – at the end of Oliver Stone’s Platoonwhen Charlie Sheen is giving his “The war is over for me now…” speechfollowed by the end credits.Well, now I have heard something horrible. Many other classical works have beendesecrated before now, but this one had been left untouched. However, I had themisfortune to hear a horrible synthesizer break-forth with this rot, beforethe dance beats kicked in, making it sound like a slowed-down version ofFaithless’ Salva Mea.
If Nicolas Cage thought he had problems coping with what he saw in8mm, just think how much counselling you’ll need after you hear thisequivalent of musical rape.
3 Vengaboys – Kiss When the Sun Don’t Shine :O ===And they can stick it WHERE the sun don’t shine… 1 (1) Cliff Richard – The Millennium Prayer :O === *3rd Week at No.1*The Lord’s Prayer set to the music of Auld Lang Syne. Sounds like a dreadfulprospect, and I’ve now heard the record. It’s even worse. The music and the lyrics don’t go together at all. None of it scans, andthe worst bit is that which made me cringe – the ending. As he’s about toclose, he starts going on chanting “Amen…Amen…Amen…Amen…” etc.
It makes me want to scream at him to stuff his God shite up his arse!Definitely the worst single ever made.
And thanks to Cliff, he breaks the record-breaking run of 32 singles goingstraight in at No.1 which concluded, thus :
