Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    29 Pulp – Party Hard *

Another track from the “This Is Hardcore” album, and a good tune, but hasn’tgot too much in the way of airplay lately. Expect it to drop out next week.

17 Depeche Mode – Only When I Lose Myself

First Depeche Mode single in a while and it pre-empts the Singles 86-98album out in two weeks. However, I haven’t heard this tune at all! IfITV hadn’t canned The Chart Show in favour of Ant & Twatting Dec I wouldhave heard this plenty of times.

If this was played on Ant & Dec, then I didn’t hear it as I won’t watchtheir show, Cat Deeley or no Cat Deeley 🙂

    13 Alisha’s Attic – The Incidentals * !!!

Taken from their forthcoming album “Illuminum” due out on Sept 28th, thisrecord reminds you why you switched the radio on in the first place.

A gentle ballad with whistful harmonies, very memorable, great to singalongto (unless you’ve got a voice like mine :), and we have the best single of theweek which deserved the No.1 slow FAR more than the individual who currentlyresides there this week.

1 (NEW) Robbie Williams – Millenium *1st Week at No.1*

This was always destined to become his first No.1 since the release of “Angels”rescued his album from the bargain bins of the world, not to mention theendless bouts of promotion he has done for it.

The song itself is very average, the promo video being a James Bond spoof, the background music coming from, I think, You Only Live Twice, but overallit’s good enough for me to not hate it.

This is the tenth single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. B*witched – C’est La Vie
  • 2. Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds – 3 Lions 98
  • 3. Billie – Because We Want To
  • 4. Another Level – Freak Me
  • 5. Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground
  • 6. Spice Girls – Viva Forever
  • 7. Boyzone – No Matter What
  • 8. Manic Street Preachers – If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
  • 9. All Saints – Bootie Call
  • 10. Robbie Williams – Millenium

Ten No.1’s in a row equals the record set in the chart at week ending April13th 1996 when the Prodigy rounded off 10 singles going in at No.1 in a rowwhich began with Shaggy. If there’s a new No.1 going straight in next time, that will set a new record. The smart money’s on Mel B’s first solo single,a dire rap track with Missy ‘Should be a Misdemeanour For Releasing What IDo’ Elliot, although runners-up will be Republica.

The previous Top 10 No.1 list looks like this :

  • 1. Shaggy – Boombastic
  • 2. Simply Red – Fairground
  • 3. Coolio – Gangsta’s Paradise
  • 4. Robson & Jerome – I Believe/Up on the Roof
  • 5. Michael Jackson – Earth Song
  • 6. George Michael – Jesus to a Child
  • 7. Babylon Zoo – Spaceman
  • 8. Oasis – Don’t Look Back in Anger
  • 9. Take That – How Deep is Your Love
  • 10. The Prodigy – Firestarter

    Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997

    38. Prefab Sprout – A Prisoner Of The Past

This was the first single from Prefab Sprout in as long a time as I canremember, certainly the first since my charts began, but they easily make thebest single of the week of that week with a song that is classic Prefab Sproutand it made No.30 in May last year.

The B-side (if a CD single can have a B-side is Paddy McAloon’s theme tune fromITV’s drama “Where The Heart Is”).

Their only other single “Electric Guitars” made No.53 in August 1997.

Now if only they’ll re-release “Carnival 2000” at the end of next year…

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
