In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 12 new entries, 4 climbers, 7 non-movers & 17 downers
It’s goodbye to :
And hello to :
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
Given that it’s Xmas, the charts tend to stagnate with many more singles beingsold and the only ones shooting into the top 5 being the Xmas sure-things,hence no new entries in the Top 10 this week – the first time this year even.
12 new entries this week, 4 climbers (All Saints from 5 to 4, Robbie Williamsfrom 7 to 5, Natalie Imbruglia from 9 to 8, and Elton John from 11 to 10),7 non-movers for Teletubbies at 1, Perfect Day at 2, Aqua at 3, Barbra Streisand& Celine Dion at 13, Lutricia McNeal at 14, Reds United at 16, and BackstreetBoys at 25, and 17 going down.
Big fallers include Blackstreet (18 to 33), Will Smith (23 to 36), Mariah Carey (22 to 37) and Jamiroquai (20 to 39).
Nothing to report this week.
Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…
40 Serious Danger – Deeper *
Debut single from this band, and an excellent uptempo effort. Perfecttune to drive to, but a shame it won’t do any better than this because theirrecord company have stupidly released it so close to Christmas.
However, I predict their next single will be bigger, whenever that is dueout, and this will get a re-release and go Top 10. Watch this space!
38 Powerhouse – Rhythm of the Night
Dreadful cover of the DeBarge song.
21 Bjork – Bachelorette * !!!
Second single from “Homogenic”, and doing much better than the first one,“I Miss You” which made No.36 in March.
19 Propellerheads featuring Miss Shirley Bassey – History Repeating
Shirley Bassey gets her first Top 20 hit since 1973 with a dance-beattune collaboration with the fast-rising Propellorheads, last in the chartswith David Arnold doing a cover of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, andtaken from the album, “Shaken and Stirred”.
This isn’t the first time she has accompanied on a track which usually isn’ther style. In August 1987 she made No.54 with Yello on “The Rhythm Divine”,although the track was a hit across Europe, and last year Chris Rea playedwhile Shirley sang on “Disco La Passione”, taken from his film, “La Passione”,but it became one of those tunes which unfortunately only gets as far as No.41
I’ve heard this new track in two versions, one with many more beats in itwhich isn’t as good, and another which is more of a swing-style effort whichis the one used in the video.
18 Bryan Adams – Back To You :O ===
First single released from Bryan Adams‘s “Unplugged” set, and what a dullone it is too. Years ago he made decent songs like “Heaven” and “In The Heatof the Night”, neither of which set the charts on fire, but it always seems tobe those that sell well which are so duff.
17 Sting And The Police – Roxanne 97 :O ===
Remixed, or bastardised, by “Puff” (!) Daddy, and turned into a (c)rap song.Far removed from the original, and just as bad as the No.1 hit “I’ll Be MissingYou”, itself a bastardised version of “Every Breath You Take”, used as a tributeto murdered rap star The Notorious BIG.
Why Sting gave his approval to these songs is beyond me.
12 U2 – If God Will Send His Angels *
Fifth single from U2‘s “Pop” album, and the first to miss the Top 10.A slow tune, but doesn’t beat my favourite from them this year, “Staring AtThe Sun”.
11 Celine Dion – The Reason :O ===
No reason at all to release this. Carole King, who duets, should know better.
4 (5) All Saints – Never Ever
This, and “I Know Where It’s At”, but their next single, “Under The Bridge”is a dire “cover” of the Red Hot Chili Peppers classic (which made No.26 inMarch 92, and then No.13 when reissued in April 94). I loved the original, butthis, as performed on TFI Friday, is a pale imitation of it.
They’ve also massacred another classic tune by Labelle, namely “Lady Marmalade”,their one and only hit as a group, which made No.17 in March 1975, and had thetop-notch chorus, “Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi, Ce Soir?”
And I had such high hopes for them as well…
1 (1) Teletubbies – Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh! *2nd Week at No.1*
Does this need any introduction? Well, just in case you haven’t been livingin Britain, the Teletubbies are four fat teddy-bear-like creatures namedTinky Winky (who’s purple), Dipsy (green), Laa-Laa (yellow), and Po (red),and who each have a television in their stomachs.
They spend 30 mins a day running about in Teletubbyland doing various dances,eating Tubbytoast, or Tubbycustard, and instead of saying “Hello”, they say”Eh-Oh”. At some point the TV’s in their stomachs light up, and one of themplays an educational video of sorts. Elsewhere in the show, the hoover,Noo-Noo, will attempt to clean up.
Created by Ragdoll Productions, the Teletubbies are this years hot toy, withshops selling out as soon as they open and stocks being limited to one percustomer. Why the creators didn’t organise enough toys is anyone’s guess afterthe farce last year when the Buzz Lightyear dolls sold out in droves.
The Teletubbies have a connection with Shakespeare in that their home isalso Stratford-Upon-Avon, and courted controversy when the first “Tinky Winky”,played by Dave Thompson, was sacked for not playing his part properly….
All said and done, this single is just the programme’s theme tune, and ishotly-tipped to make No.1 for Xmas ahead of the Spice Girls.
This is now the second single to go straight in at No.1 in a row :
