The initial bit :

In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.

This week : 16 new entries, 0 climbers, 3 non-movers & 21 downers

It’s goodbye to : No Mercy (40), Fugees (39), Blue Boy (38), Boyzone (37), Future Sound of London (36), Wet Wet Wet (35), Spice Girls (34 – 2 Become 1), Gina G (33), Up Yer Ronson feat. Mary Pearce (32), 3T featuring Herbie (30), Funky Green Dogs (29), MC Lyte featuring Xscape (27), Livin’ Joy (26), Makaveli (25), Bryan Adams (22), and Natural Born Grooves (21)

And hello to : Slacker (36), David Bowie (32), Robert Owens (25), KRS One (24), Supernaturals (23), Zhane (22), Gun (21), The Wannadies (20), 2 Pac and Snoop Doggy Dogg (16), Michelle Gayle (14), Faithless (10), Lightning Seeds (8), Blackstreet (6), Daft Punk (5), U2 (3), and Robbie Williams (2).

CHART TIME !

(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

In the past week, plenty of speculation has come about concerning how lastweek’s Top 10 featured *SEVEN* new entries which was a new record, and somepeople started making noises about how the chart ought to be compileddifferently, with CIN stating that they wouldn’t change how they compile thecharts as it accurately reflects the sales as it is.

My point of view is that the chart does reflect the sales accurately, butthose at fault are the shops and the record companies. Why? Because when therecord companies sell singles to the shops, they’re sold at just over UKP 2.00apiece, but for established bands, the shops are given a couple of extrafreebies for EACH single sold : 3 for the price of one. No wonder they sellfor 99p or 1.99 in the first week out, hence gaining high chart entries. That’s the sort of practice that needs to be stopped.

37. Suede – Lazy *
27. Kavana – MFEO :O ===

These two singles are a case in point in relation to the above. Suede droppedfrom 9 to 37, and Kavana from 8 to 27…

32 David Bowie – Dead Man Walking * !!!

Second single from Bowie’s “Earthling” album, and not quite as frantic as“Little Wonder”, but still worth a blast when it comes on the radio, ‘when’being the operative word as it gets rarely any airplay.

24 KRS One – Step Into A World (Rapture’s Delight)

Hmm, I was in two minds about this one at first, and then decided no.It’s basically a cover of Blondie’s Rapture, with extra beats. Stick with theoriginal.

23 The Supernaturals – Smile (R) *

First released in July last year, it only made No.117, but now it’s theirbiggest hit to date beating “Lazy Lover” (No.34) and “The Day Before Yesterday’sMan” (No.25). It’s a damn fine pop song and deserves mucho airplay.

21 Gun – Grazy You :O ===

What happened to Gun? In the late 80’s they made great records like “BetterDays”, and more recently they’ve come out with a duff cover of “Word Up” andthis which is absolute garbage. Time for them to call it a day methinks.

20 The Wannadies – Hit *

It’s been a year and a week since the Wannadies had their biggest hit to dateat No.18 with the “You and Me Song”, and this is another memorable pop tunewith an interesting ‘duet’ in the chorus.

16 2 Pac and Snoop Doggy Dogg – Wanted Dead or Alive

I guess they are respectively, although not quite. One’s dead and the other’sbrain dead.

14 Michelle Gayle – Sensational

Not.

8 Lightning Seeds – You Showed Me *

I can’t remember who did the original, but it was last covered by Salt N Pepaa few years ago. The Lightning Seeds have done it much better though.

7. Shola Ama – You Might Need Somebody

I’ve taken the star away from this for reasons which shall become apparent.

Last week I said :

“I don’t know who Shola Ama is but she’s done a very good cover version ofthe old Randy Crawford song, which made No.11 in 1981 inbetween “One Day I’llFly Away” and “Rainy Night in Georgia”.

Perhaps the Fugees should take a note out of her book, and only do coverswithout the need for all that “One time, two time” shit in the middle..”

Now I realise that the Fugees had a hand in it too as the song is ruinedby the bloke from the Fugees spouting gobshite throughout the record. WhenWILL they learn ?!?!?

5 Daft Punk – Around the World *

Good funky follow-up to “Da Funk”, and it beats its chart position by twoplaces.

3 U2 – Staring At The Sun *

I hated “Discotheque”, but I love “Staring at the Sun”. Call it this year’s,“One”.

2 Robbie Williams – Old Before I Die

Robbie Williams admitted on the “Ozone” recently that he didn’t release“Freedom” as a statement for his first single, but because he simply didn’thave anything else. Well now he has, and this is it, and it’s bobbins.

1 R. Kelly – I Believe I Can Fly *3rd Week at No.1*

Still there, and still taken from the hit film, “Space Jam”, but who’ll beNo.1 next week? I thought it would have been No Doubt’s “Just a Girl”, butthat seems to have disappeared from the new releases list…

17. Charlatans – One To Another

It’s a record which started off as ‘okay’ at first, but after several listens,it had to be one of the best singles of the year beginning with a thumpingbassline and a crash of drums, and just excels from there. It made No.3 lastSeptember.

Their follow-up, North Country Boy, made No.4 recently, and their new album‘Telling Stories’ is out soon.

The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the list, just mailme at Charts Request to tell me, but please specify whether you want the music charts and/or the widescreen video and laserdisc lists.

Bye for now,

Dominator
