Elly Roberts reviews
ft. Rufus Wainwright:
To America
[To Survive]
Marriage made in heaven ! Musically.
Theres only one problem with this single, or song, its not long enough, for me anyway.
Matching two musical troubadours could be a recipe for disaster, though they have worked successfully before, so they know what theyre getting into.
Not in this case. To America is one of the best songs Ive heard in 2008. Its lifted from Wassers highly acclaimed album To Survive, released June this year.
It has beauty, charm, exquisite production and that rare quality, class.
It starts with gentle piano by multi-instrumentalist Joan Wasser aka JAPW, and then she slips effortlessly into the most gorgeous of melancholic vocals, texturised by sombre strings. Seamlessly, Rufus slips in. His sublime and emotive colours are the icing on the cake. After drifting to the ¾ mark, theres an ominous drum roll segued by a jazzy sequence and eventually the pair duet to the close and fade-out into the distance.
B-side Radish (To Be Free) is equally impressive, but no Rufus this time.
File under: Stunning.

Elly Roberts passed away in 2011, but he was a man who was so passionate about all types of music and loved meeting his musical heroes, such as Mick Hucknall at a book signing at the Trafford Centre, Manchester in 2007.
A former teacher and also a music journalist, DJ and radio presenter on local community station Calon FM, plus appearances on BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Radio 2, Elly started doing reviews for DVDfever.co.uk in 2004 and he did the majority of the CD and concerts reviews on the website.
I know also that he loved getting away for the summer to Spain and I hope that wherever he is now he is enjoying the hot sunshine and, as one of his friends has said on his Facebook page, that he is interviewing his musical heroes.
