Tony Christie: (Is This The Way To) The World Cup (Tug Records)

Following last year’s smash hit, Is This The Way To Amarillo? pennedby Neil Sedaka, the same tune gets revamped lyrics by football fans IanStringer, a football commentator and Big George Webley, credited with musicfor Have I Got News For You and The Office.

They got the demo played by BBC Radio 1’s Chris Moyles, who said, “Trust mewhen I tell you this will go round in your head.”
Stringer added,“.. our song connects with the terraces, it is about the passion anddesire of England competing in – and winning – the World Cup.”
Co-writerGeorge said, “If it wasn’t for SportAid we might not have seen the likesof Freddie Flintoff, Kelly Holmes and Steve Redgrave. That’s why we’re givingeverything to SportsAid.”

Tony Christie loved the reworking and jumped at the chance to record itand even if the words are predictably terrace-orientated, its well worthsupporting.

All proceeds received by Ian and George will go to SportsAid.
