Hands of Stone follows the life of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramírez), who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16-year-old and retired in 2002 at age 50. In June 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher Raymond) to capture the WBC welterweight title but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in the November rematch, saying ‘no mas’ (no more).
Written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz the cast also includes Robert De Niro, Ellen Barkin, Ana de Armas, John Turturro, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rubén Blades plus The Wire‘s Reg E Cathey as Don King.
Boxing dramas are hit and miss (no pun intended) for me, so when Hands of Stone enters the ring in the US on August 26th, I won’t be ringing the bell. As for the UK, take a time out as there’s no date yet.
