Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell had a very strong opening with its first episode and, even though I didn’t follow everything that was going on, I enjoyed it immensely and will be watching the rest of the series, which continues tomorrow on BBC1 at 9pm.
The series is based on the 2004 novel by Susanna Clarke, depicting an alternative history set in 19th-century England around the time of the Napoleonic Wars, a time when, with magic long since lost to England, two men are destined to bring it back; the reclusive Mr Norrell (Eddie Marsan – Still Life) and daring novice Jonathan Strange (Bertie Carvel – Coalition). So begins a dangerous battle between two great minds…
The series also stars Marc Warren (Mad Dogs, The Musketeers), Alice Englert (New Worlds), Paul Kaye (Dennis Pennis), Vincent Franklin (Cucumber), Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders) and Samuel West (Fleming, W1A).
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is a seven-part series adapted for TV by Peter Harness and directed by Toby Haynes, and it continues on BBC1 tomorrow night at 9pm.
