coverIf I was to say this game was just like most racing games, I would not be far wrong, which ties in with its location. Almost nothing has changed between Mille Miglia and those that have gone before it and, coincidentally, you’ll also find that if you try to ask someone in Italy for change for the phone – even the Bureau de Change – you’ll be refused, as I found when I went interrailing in 1992 and wanted to use the phone at the station in Venice.

I only succeeded in extracting some from the luggage attendant because I’d paid him earlier to look after my rucksack.

But back to the plot and this game is based on the famous Italian race with locations to match.

cover That’s where the differences end though. In similar fashion to Colin McRae Rally 2.0, you don’t get the feeling of speed that you need. Some of the classic cars don’t appear to run as fast as others which hinders your enjoyment. Also, the PSX is really beginning to show it’s age in terms of how jagged the graphics can look and some games can’t be saved with the PS2‘s ‘smooth’ textures.

The sound is even more disappointing and everything you hear is all that’s gone before. I turned down the accompanying music which started to grate after a while and the ‘roar’ of the engine sounded like a grizzly bear with stomach ache.
