In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
14 new entries this week, one climber (Verve from 14 to 12) and two non-moversfor Todd Terry (15) and Eternal (17).
Big fallers include Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (16 to 36), Gary Barlow (11 to 30),Robbie Williams (8 to 27) and Seahorses (7 to 20).
37 Peter Cox – Ain’t Gonna Cry Again *
Finally after the demise of one of the 80s best bands, Go West, in 1993,Peter Cox releases his debut solo single. It’s a good one, but it’s verydoubtful that it’ll better this position.
32 Edwyn Collins – The Magic Piper (of Love)
By contrast, while I’d always take Edwyn’s “Rip it Up” in his 1983 guise,Orange Juice, in favour of 1994’s “A Girl Like You”, it’s the latter whichwill continue to be the song he’s best known for as this single enters lowly,no doubt to disappear next week, although it’s not very good anyway.
21 Reef – Yer Old *
Loud and to the point. It had “Top 10” written all over it everywhere exceptin the chart itself.
16 Morrissey – Alma Matters *
The first single from Morrissey in ages, and it’s very good, but whether it doesany better here remains to be seen.
9 Mamas and the Papas – California Dreamin’ (R)
Out in the shops again after being used in a lager commercial (I forget whichone). Personally I preferred “Dedicated to the One I Love”.
6 Meredith Brooks – Bitch :O ===
Oh dear. “Alanis Morissette 2” makes her UK chart debut, and it doesn’t workat all. Any song which begins “I hate the world today” is already onto a loser,and her voice just doesn’t have the strength to carry it through.
2 Boyzone – Picture of You *
A very good single from Boyzone (you won’t often find me saying that), andtaken from the new Rowan Atkinson film, “Bean : The Ultimate Disaster Movie”,released on August 8th in the UK, and one that I shall be steering well clearof.
1 (1) Puff the Magic Dragon and Faith Healer – I’ll Be Missing You *5th Week at No.1*
And back it goes up deposing Oasis after one week and breaking the 7-track runof new entries at the top. The last time a single went back up to No.1 wasduring Euro 96 when Frank Skinner, David Baddiel and the Lightning Seeds‘”Three Lions” played swapsies for a while with Fugees‘ dreadful first hit”Killing a good song with a bad cover version”, both of which were deposed bythe other and went back to No.1.
