In the last chart of 1997, I posted my Top 50 singles of theyear, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1998, I’ll be going through thelist one by one.
This week : 0 new entries, 3 re-entries, 16 climbers, 9 non-movers & 12 downers
It’s goodbye to :
And hello (again) to :
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
Given that it’s Xmas, the charts tend to stagnate with many more singles beingsold and very few shooting into the Top 10.
0 new entries this week, 3 re-entries, 16 climbers (Robbie Williams from 7 to 6,Elton John from 11 to 10, Steven Houghton from 12 to 11, Barbra Streisand &Celine Dion from 13 to 12, Lutricia McNeal from 17 to 13, Celine Dion from16 to 14, Five from 19 to 15, Backstreet Boys from 23 to 21, The Verve from27 to 24, PF Project featuring Ewan Mcgregor from 28 to 26, Propellerheadsfeaturing Miss Shirley Bassey from 30 to 28, Spice Girls from 37 to 29,Gala from 31 to 30, Will Smith from 39 to 32, Levellers from 35 to 33,and Blackstreet from 40 to 38), 9 non-movers (Spice Girls at 1, Teletubbiesat 2, Perfect Day at 3, All Saints at 4, Janet Jackson at 5, Natalie Imbrugliaat 8, Boyzone at 9, Red United at 18, and Steps at 20), and 12 going down.
Big fallers include Paul McCartney (from 25 to 37).
Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…
39 Aaron Carter – Crush On You
35 Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up
34 Mariah Carey – Butterfly
The slowest chart of the year, so much so that three of last week’s lownew entries make way for three old songs to re-enter the chart.
1 (1) Spice Girls – Too Much *2nd Week at No.1*
And so they make it six singles hitting the top slot in a row, with all but“Wannabe” actually going straight into the top slot on their first week out,to be followed on Boxing Day by the UK release of their first feature film,“Spiceworld”.
But what next for the girls? The first two singles, “Wannabe” and “Say You’llBe There” hit No.1, while they were beefed up by the press, but the third,“2 Become 1” was a Xmas single, and the fourth was a double-header combinationof a Comic Relief charity track, “Who Do You Think You Are?” and a Mother’s Daysong, “Mama”.
More recently, the first single from the new album, “Spice Up Your Life”,was a hi-energy track and a sure-fire No.1, but doubts were cast over the futureof the band after they sacked their manager, Simon Fuller, and the pressbacklash began. Their luck has held out by scooping the Xmas No.1 single forthe second year in a row, but the track being played on the TV ad for thealbum, “Stop”, sounding like something that even Boyzone would reject, isprobably their next single and I doubt very much will hit the top slot.
This is now the third single to go straight in at No.1 in a row :

Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997
1. Beck – The New Pollution
Beck‘s career was going from strength to strength 1997.
His first single from the current “Odelay” album, “Where It’s At” made No.35in 1996, followed by a No.22 placing for “Devil’s Haircut” and then a No.14 forthe best single from the album, the 60’s-sounding “The New Pollution”. Swing your pants!
This was later followed by Sissyneck (No.30, May) and Deadweight (No.23,November).
The end bit :
