    Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    34 Brian Setzer Orchestra – Jump Jive ‘n’ Wail *

    The first of three new entries this week which feature in adverts, BrianSetzer’s (Stray Cats) track is used in the current adverts for the overpricedGap designer clothing company, although anything with a designer label isoverpriced.

    A very funky tune, and completely different from the Stray Cats, but unlikelyto go any further.

    10 Des’ree – You Gotta Be (remix) (R)

    Best known for “Feel So High” (No.51, Aug 91; No.13, Jan 92), this track andthe dreadful “Life” (you look it up, I hated it), “You Gotta Be” features inthe adverts for Ford Focus cars and is the third time it has had a chart entryfollowing No.20 in April 1994, and No.14 in March 1995 (in remix form).

    I liked the song at first, but this endless re-releasing is taking the piss,but what can you do when your music career is heading for Dumperville? Well, itmust be. Who else would break off from singles releases from your current albumto re-release an old one?

    5 New Radicals – You Get What You Give * !!!

    Best new single of the week is this upbeat 80s’ sounding tune which reminds meof B52’s “Follow Your Bliss” from the Cosmic Thing album, but with lyrics.

    3 Billie – Honey To The Bee

    Fourth single from Billie. Okay, but nothing special. Still, at least it’s adamn sight better than the pointless “She Wants You”, and has a much bettervideo.

    2 Cartoons – Witch Doctor :O ===

    Aqua Mk.II – if you’ve not heard this group, I’ve summed them up for you.I can’t believe this shit is allowed to be sold in shops.

    1 Mr Oizo – Flat Beat :O === *1st Week at No.1*

    Who is Mr. Oizo? Seen the Levi’s ads with the puppet tapping away to amonotonous drum beat? That’s the one. The puppet is “Flat Eric” and he isapparently the latest trend, such that everything containing his image, eg.T-shirts, are the hottest property in town.

    Sad. Sad. Sad.

    This is the 10th single to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Fatboy Slim – Praise You
  • 2. 911 – A Little Bit More
  • 3. Offspring – Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • 4. Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Harden – You Don’t Know Me
  • 5. Blondie – Maria
  • 6. Lenny Kravitz – Fly Away
  • 7. Britney Spears – Baby One More Time
  • 8. Boyzone – When The Going Gets Tough
  • 9. B*witched – Blame It On The Weatherman
  • 10. Mr Oizo – Flat Beat

    Dominator’s Top 50 of 1998

    14. Bryan Adams – I’m Ready

    I didn’t really like this ballad at first, but after a few plays of the liveMTV Unplugged version, it really grew on me. The track made No.20 in March lastyear.

    Other singles released in 1998 were another grower with an interesting video,”On A Day Like Today” (No.13, Oct) and “When You’re Gone” (No.3, Dec), thelatter also having a fairly good video, and while it’s another duet for BryanAdams, it’s Melanie C’s first time in the charts without the Spice Girls, whocollectively released “Goodbye” shortly after and went on to have the Xmas No.1for the third year running.

    If I had any complaints about this duet though, it’d be that Bryan’s voicetends to drown out Mel C’s, and that he’s wearing far too much eye make-up inthe video, making him look like an actor in “A Clockwork Orange” !

    The end bit :

    Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
