The initial bit :

In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.

This week : 18 new entries, 1 climbers, 0 non-movers & 21 downers

It’s goodbye to : Cast (40), Charlatans (39), SWV (38), Suede (37), Slacker (36), The Monstars (35), Chemical Brothers (34), N-Trance (33), David Bowie (32), Depeche Mode (31), Erykah Badu (29), Supergrass (26), Robert Owens (25), KRS One (24), Supernaturals (23), Zhane (22), GUN (21), and The Wannadies (20).

And hello to : Pavement (40), Busta Rhymes (39), Grace (38), Tony Toni Tone featuring DJ Quik (33), Silver Sun (32), Keith Sweat featuring Athena Cage (30), Tricky (29), Kenickie (27), DJ Supreme (24), D:Ream (19), Snoop Doggy Dogg (18), James (12), Brainbug (11), The Notorius BIG (10), Republica (7), Cardigans (4), 911 (3), and Michael Jackson (1).

CHART TIME !

(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

18 new entries this week! By my count that’s only happened 3 other times sincemy chart analysis began in July 1994, and as far as I know it’s the most everas well. More testament to the fact that something needs to be done about therigging of the chart by the record companies!

I mentioned this last week. For those who missed it, while the chart doesreflect the sales accurately, those at fault are the shops and the recordcompanies. Why? Because when the record companies sell singles to the shops, they’re sold at just over UKP 2.00 apiece, but for established bands, the shopsare given a couple of extra freebies for EACH single sold : 3 for the price ofone. No wonder they sell for 99p or 1.99 in the first week out, hence gaininghigh chart entries. That’s the sort of practice that needs to be stopped.

This practice is also causing massive fallers in their second week out, this week’s biggest faller being U2 from 3 to 17.

19 D:Ream – Things Can Only Get Better :O ===

One of my most hated records in recent years resufaces this week as the themefor Labour’s election campaign. If anyone thought they’d had enough of theirgeneral election when Bill Clinton got back in power, then the same is happeninghere. The BBC doubled their news programme to increase the election coverage, and their ratings promptly halved. Well, by May 1st the wait will be over, and we’ll see who’s boss in the morning, unless the IRA try to delay thingsagain in which case it’ll probably be 24 hours later.

Why don’t they just go for an easier target…like the depot where everyD:ream single and album ever made reside?

18 Snoop Doggy Dogg – Vapors

Last week a new entry at 16 with 2 Pac (down to 35 now) and now on his ownagain at 18. His records are still crap though.

12 James – Tomorrow *Second single from their new “Whiplash” album, and this one just misses theTop 10. Still, it’s a fine single, but why has Tim Booth shaved all his hairoff?

10 The Notorious BIG – Hypnotize

Following last week’s new entry for 2 Pac, another murdered rapper gets achart hit. Funny how they never had as much success when they were alive. Musthave a good marketing manager…

7 Republica – Drop Dead Gorgeous *

Second single from Republica’s eponymous album, and this one beats “Ready ToGo”‘s placing by 6. While this new single is very good, and just as loud asthe last, “Ready To Go” is still one of my favourites over the last year ortwo.

6. Shola Ama – You Might Need Somebody

The only climber this week, moving up one place.

4 Cardigans – Lovefool (Remix) (R) * !!!

I had to give careful thought to making this record of the week as firstly it’sa re-entry, and secondly it’s been less than a year since it was last in thecharts (at No.21 in Sept 96), AND they haven’t bothered to release anothertrack from their album, “First Band on the Moon” in the meantime.

The reasons for giving this best single of the week are that :

  • (a) lead singer Nina Persson is a babe
  • (b) If this single projects the Cardigans records onto most radio stations A-playlists, then it’s worth seeing it out again so soon.

Of course, the main reason it has been re-released is that it’s featured inthe new film, “Romeo and Juliet”. I can’t find any part of the single that’sbeen remixed though. However, none of it compares to their best ever track,“Sick and Tired”. I wish they’d re-release that.

    3 911 – Bodyshakin’

Making a play for Boyzone’s teen crown perhaps? Spot the “Ant and Dec” lookalikeamongst the band.

1 Michael Jackson – Blood on the Dance Floor*1st Week at No.1*

Deposing R.Kelly after 3 weeks is our Wacko Jacko with a record that certainlydoesn’t deserve to be No.1
