Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

34 (3) Doves – There Goes The FearIs this the biggest drop ever in the charts?

17 Mad Donna – The Wheels on the BusAn impersonator doing the old school favourite to the tune of “Ray of Light”,or is it Maddie herself? Who knows? Who cares? It’s awful.

9 Idlewild – You Held The World In Your ArmsTheir first big hit, for some reason, and I say that not because they don’tdeserve it, but because this is far from their best work, especially comparedto classics like “These Wooden Ideas” and “Actually It’s Darkness”.

2 S Club Juniors – One Step CloserIt’s even more horrible than you could imagine.

1 Sugababes – Freak Like Me *1st Week at No.1*

The three girls have done an Atomic Kitten: they’ve changed a band member, been dumped by their record company (well, AK nearly were) and then just asthey’re about to be consigned to the flop-shop, they suddenly get a No.1 hit!

It’s a combination of Gary Numan’s “Are Friends Electric”, in the form ofthe backing track, plus the lyrics from Adina Howard’s “Freak Like Me”.

This is the 8th single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. Aaliyah – More Than a Woman
  • 2. George Harrison – My Sweet Lord (R)
  • 3. Enrique Iglesias – Hero
  • 4. Westlife – World of Our Own
  • 5. Will Young – Anything is Possible/Evergreen

  • 7. Oasis – The Hindu Times
  • 8. Sugababes – Freak Like Me

Dominator’s Top 50 of 2001After last week’s look back at all the Top 50 tracks of last year, this week sees the list of my Top 50 of 2001. From next week I shallbegin my look back at them.

18. Creed – With Arms Wide OpenMaking No.13 in January last year, this was intelligent heavy rock withincredible vocals and, surprisingly, airplay on mainstream stations, not justMTV2. Sadly, they failed to score a big follow-up.Review copyright © Dominic Robinson, 2002.
