In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, pickingout the Top 10 first. During 1999, I’ll be going through the list one by onestarting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
13 new entries :
“Model-turned-singer” – it happens all the time. Sometimes they make superbsingles, although none spring to mind at this point in time, but at other timesthey make dire pieces of excrement that make me cry at the lost minutes of timethat I can’t claw back ever again.
That is what can be said of “Oh Yeah”, the model’s debut single, now that she’sturned her back on the catwalk. However, looking at the disappointingfar-from-Top 10 positioning of this track, it can’t be long before she’s upthere strutting her stuff in half-arsed clothing again.
Oh, and the chorus sounds a hell of a lot like it’s about to lead into thechorus for Hepburn’s “Bugs”.
12 A Teens – Mamma Mia :O ===The ABBA revival starts here…again…and this single is terrible.
4 Moloko – Sing it Back *Not the only non-virginal release in the Top 5 this week, this track in itsprevious form only made No.45 earlier this year in March. A remix sends itcrashing into the Top 5 after plenty of airplay in the clubs and on the radio.
1 Lou Bega – Mambo No.5 *1st Week at No.1*After becoming the first single to climb into the Top 40, when only beingavailable on import, since The Jam’s That’s Entertainment, the UK release ofthis single secures it a top slot, one place about Shaft’s similar “Mucho Mambo”
It’s not a bad tune, but isn’t the most impressive since it’s the rapping thatspoils it. Without the rapping, those who saw the recent Guiness advert willremember it accompanying the one where the old man swims for exactly 119.5seconds as the perfect pint is scored and his brother and the town cheer him on.On TV it was quite a short ad, but at the cinema it seemed to go on forever.
This is the 24th single to go straight in at No.1.

36. Meja – All ‘Bout The MoneyWhen I heard this artist’s name pronounced as “Maya” I thought it was thegirl who sang with The Temperer for the crappy “Feel It”, but it’s not andI’ve heard this single in both standard and dance versions, both rather funkyand deserved a Top 10 placing, but it only made No.12 in October last year.However, it won the single-of-the-week award from me.
