In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, pickingout the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one.I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 14 new entries, 1 re-entry, 1 climbers, 1 non-movers & 23 downers
It’s goodbye to : Ant and Dec (40), Jean Michel Jarre (39), Cake (38), Mark Morrison (37), Republica (36), Source featuring Candi Staton (35), Divine Comedy (34), Alisha’s Attic (32), Braxtons (31), Lamb (30), Fun Lovin’ Criminals (28), Sean Maguire (27), Beautiful South (23), Sheryl Crow (22), and Pet Shop Boys (9)
And hello to : Brian Kennedy (37), Yvette Michelle (36), Silverchair (34), Spice Girls (again) (31), JT Playaz (30), Reef (13), Livin’ Joy (12), N-Trance (11), 3T (10), B Real/Busta Rhymes/Coolio/LL Cool J/Method Man (8), Cast (7), DJ Quicksilver (6), Charlatans (4), and the Chemical Brothers (1).
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
37 Brian Kennedy – Put the Message In the Box
One of Ireland’s up and coming singer-songwriters, who has recently beentouring, has done a cover version of the World Party song. While I likedhis single last year, “A Better Man”, his voice just doesn’t seem to do justiceto this song.
32 En Vogue – Don’t Let Go (Love)
Back up one place this week, and being the only climber makes it the highestclimber…
31 Spice Girls – 2 Become 1
There’s just no getting away from them is there…
24 Madonna – Another Suitcase in Another Hall
Madonna’s latest single dropped 17 places this week, which makes me wonderif they’ll release any more singles from her album as a result.
13 Reef – Consideration *
3rd single from Reef’s current album, and this one is more of a ballad, andgood stuff too.
12 Livin’ Joy – Where Can I Find Love
Appalling…
11 N-Trance – D.I.S.C.O :O ===
Not content with ruining both the Pearl and Dean theme, and Led Zepplin’s”Whole Lotta Love”, this time they’ve destroyed the Ottawan classic of 1982.
7 Cast – Free Me
It’s difficult to know where to start with this one. Some of their recordsare okay, and some I can live without, but there’s none that really jump outand demand to be heard.
4 Charlatans – North Country Boy
Second single from Charlatans return to the charts, and this one has had massiveplay all over the radio stations, but it just doesn’t do it for me, especiallynot when compared to the excellent “One to Another”.
1 The Chemical Brothers – Block Rockin’ Beats *1st Week at No.1*
Following their last single, “Setting Sun”, which also made No.1, I can’tunderstand why this one is as it’s not particularly good.
This single now makes 7 in a row going straight in at No.1, with the liststanding as :

SO HELP ME GIRL………………………………….Gary Barlow (RCA)
This week’s chart sees only one new entry in the Top 10, being Lisa Stansfield‘snew self-titled album in at No.2. No Doubt go back up 2 places to no.4 with“Tragic Kingdom”, but the Spice Girls are still at the top.
Below the 10, Gina G‘s new album, “Fresh”, hurls its way into No.12 with agross pic of Gina G covered in chocolate on the front. If the singles so farare anything to go by, I hold out little hope for the whole album.
Elsewhere, Machine Head are in at 16 with “The More Things Change…”,the Notorius BIG who was recently blasted to death in a drive-by shootinga la Tupac Shakur, is at 23 with “Life After Death”, and 10cc have a repackagedgreatest hits album at 37.

14. Edward Ball – The Mill-Hill Self-Hate Club
Edward Ball has to be one of the most underrated singer-songwriters makingrecords today, and this one only made No.57 back in July 96. The main hookof the song was “If you see her, tell her”, and if it had been called thatthen perhaps it would’ve been a hit. When I first heard it, although the titledoes come up in the song it doesn’t quite jump up and grab you.
However, with his followups, “Trailblaze” (No.126, Sept 96) and “Love is Blue”(No.59, Feb 97), Edward Ball’s output is certainly one to be watched. It’sa shame “Love is Blue” didn’t make the chart as it was plugged plenty on TV,coming so close to Valentine’s Day as it did, and the girl in the video wasa babe 🙂
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the list, just mailme atCharts Request to tell me,but please specify whether you want the music charts and/or the widescreenvideo and laserdisc lists.
Bye for now,
