In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, pickingout the Top 10 first. During 1999, I’ll be going through the list one by onestarting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.
This week : 10 new entries, 0 climbers, 3 non-movers & 27 downers.CHART TIME !
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
10 new entries:
11 Supergrass – Pumping on your Stereo
Both new singles from these bands are worth a listen, but neither will changeyour life.
4 Jamiroquai – Canned Heat * !!!More laidback funk, rather than punchy dance music which is what last year’srelease, Deeper Underground, brought us, this is equally deserving of yourattention.
1 Shanks and Bigfoot – Sweet Like Chocolate :O ===*2nd Week at No.1*What the hell is this? Apparently in the first week out it sold many timesmore copies than anything out, but it’s a very average dance tune with acrap promo that looks like a Coronation Street intro.
Shanks and Bigfoot? Armitage Shanks and Bigfoot morelike.
This is the 15th single to go straight in at No.1.

Dominator’s Top 50 of 1998
23. Fat Les – VindalooA combination of Keith Allen, Blur’s Alex James and Damien Hirst (a stupid idiotwho thinks putting half a cow in formaldihyde is ‘art’) make up Fat Les whomade one of the two songs to celebrate the 1998 World Cup and both were releasedin the same week.
The other was a reworking of 1996’s “Three Lions”, again by Baddiel and Skinnerand made No.1, but while “Vindaloo” made No.2 it was much more of a singalongsong, mostly chanting “Vindaloo” with a piss-take video of the Verve’sBittersweet Symphony, and appearances from Matt Lucas (aka The man with thescores, George Dawes), Rowland Rivron and a Mick Miller lookalike.
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
Bye for now,
