Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

20 Space – The Bad Days EP (inc. We’ve Gotta Get Out Of This Place) *

First out the trap in this section are Space who should have had a big hitwith this since “Begin Again” only made No.21 in July making it one of theirlowest scoring hits to date.

Highlight of this EP is their rousing cover of The Animals’ “We’ve Gotta GetOut Of This Place”, excellent most of the time but doesn’t quite have theedge of the original.

19 Sheryl Crow – There Goes The Neighbourhood

Second single from Ms. Crow’s “Globe Sessions” album and it’s okay but nothingspecial, with a dull video to boot.

10 Vonda Shepard – Searchin’ My Soul (Theme from Ally McBeal)

Standard country music fare, but it’s the theme tune to the Channel 4 showcurrently getting an airing again on (UK) Living so it’s a big hit as is thesoundtrack album.

7 All Saints – War Of Nerves

All Saints Xmas single, not doing too well compared to their other recentefforts which went straight in at No.1 even though they were terrible and”Bootie Call” was more reminiscent of the Atari VCS game, “Yars Revenge”than a sexy phone call if you listen closely.

Still, they’ll be bring home the bacon with a new remix album, althoughit’s more a collection of singles remixes rather than remixes from the othertracks on their album.

    6 Madonna – The Power Of Goodbye/Little Star * !!!

Maddie does it again turning the beat up just a little after the ballad,“Drowned World/Substitute For Love” which made No.10 in September.

Now the difficult decision will be which of her singles makes it into myTop 50 of the year. I liked all of them from the off except for “Ray of Light”which I first described as an “energetic mess” but after a few listens, anda late night MTV viewing, it became one of my favourite tunes at the time.

    1 (1) Cher – Believe :O === *6th Week at No.1*

Cher goes Techno. The end result sounds like she’s singing through a toiletas a machine controls the inflection in her voice and makes her sound likeProfessor Stephen Hawking.

This is the fifteenth single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. B*witched – C’est La Vie
  • 2. Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds – 3 Lions 98
  • 3. Billie – Because We Want To
  • 4. Another Level – Freak Me
  • 5. Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground
  • 6. Spice Girls – Viva Forever
  • 7. Boyzone – No Matter What
  • 8. Manic Street Preachers – If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
  • 9. All Saints – Bootie Call
  • 10. Robbie Williams – Millenium
  • 11. Melanie B featuring Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott – I Want You Back
  • 12. B*witched – Rollercoaster
  • 13. Billie – Girlfriend
  • 14. Spacedust – Gym And Tonic
  • 15. Cher – Believe

Fourteen No.1’s in a row beats the record set in the chart at week endingApril 13th 1996 when the Prodigy rounded off 10 singles going in at No.1 in arow which began with Shaggy. Let’s see how many more are to follow…

The previous Top 10 No.1 list looks like this :

  • 1. Shaggy – Boombastic
  • 2. Simply Red – Fairground
  • 3. Coolio – Gangsta’s Paradise
  • 4. Robson & Jerome – I Believe/Up on the Roof
  • 5. Michael Jackson – Earth Song
  • 6. George Michael – Jesus to a Child
  • 7. Babylon Zoo – Spaceman

    Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997

    49. UB40 – Tell Me Is It True

Their only single last year was the main song from the action sequel “Speed 2:Cruise Control”, making No.14 in August, and not only is it a damn good gentlereggae tune, but the band also have a part in the film itself as Sandra Bullock, and new beau Jason Patric (who replaced Keanu Reeves as he went off to playwith his crap band Dogstar, and star in even crappier films like ChainReaction and Johnny Mnemonic), where they provide the on-boat entertainment inthe evening performing this song, as well as their cover of “Can’t HelpFalling In Love With You”, recorded by the band in 1993 for the Sharon Stoneflop film, “Sliver”.

So, is “Speed 2” worth watching? The answer is most definitely yes. Don’tlisten to all the newspapers who all had something against it, if you liked thefirst film, this one still has the pace, as well as more action before andafter the main boat sequence, in similar fashion to the first film. Willem Dafoeisn’t quite as evil an enemy as Dennis Hopper, but then who could be afterHopper’s performance in “Blue Velvet”.

Now it’s out on video and soon on PAL Laserdisc, so you have no excuse notto get it.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
