In the last chart of 1997, I posted my Top 50 singles of theyear, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1998, I’ll be going through thelist one by one.
This week : 12 new entries, 3 climbers, 0 non-movers & 25 downers
It’s goodbye to :
And hello to :
CHART TIME !
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
12 new entries this week, 3 climbers (Robbie Williams from 7 to 6, OTT from 20to 19, and Lutricia McNeal from 25 to 22), 0 non-movers and 25 going down.
Big fallers include Oasis (5 to 14), Green Day (11 to 20), Byron Stingly (13to 25), Juliet Roberts (15 to 32), Pearl Jam (12 to 35) and Solid Harmonie(18 to 37).
Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…
28 Dubstar – I Will Be Your Girlfriend *
Third single from their current album, and still very good but doesn’t quitematch the excellence of their other two singles from it so far, the brilliant“No More Talk” and the catchy “Cathedral Park”, although clearly not catchyenough as it only made it to No.41.
26 Rolling Stones – Saint Of Me *
Second single released from the “Radio Babylon” album, and it charts 4 placeslower than “Anybody Seen My Baby?” which made No.22 in October last year.
Every track from the Rolling Stones is a good one, but far from being closeto their best.
24 Carleen Anderson – Maybe I’m Amazed * !!!
It’s been just over three years since Carleen Anderson was last in the chartswith “Let It Last” (No.16, Jan 95), and she returns with a cover of PaulMcCartney‘s song which made No.28 in February 1977.
I was a bit sceptical at first when I heard this as it’s one that I’ve neverheard played in the radio by Macca, so the one that will be played will bethis one, and if I didn’t like the cover version, then it would become veryirritating. Thankfully, it’s a very soulful version which is fantasticand getting plenty of airplay, which makes it a shame it’s only made No.24this week, meaning it’ll probably go down next week.
13 Ce Ce Peniston – Somebody Else’s Guy *
Originally done by Jocelyn Brown in April 1984, this also made No.13 makingthat a lucky number for once. “Somebody Else’s Guy” is a funky disco song that’shard to do badly while keeping the song’s spirit.
I’d previously not been Ce Ce’s biggest fan when I first heard “Finally” in1991, and even less so when it was re-released in 1992 making No.2 andgetting endless airplay. However, that all changed when I saw it used in theexcellent comedy, “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert” atwhich point I’ve liked that song a lot more since.
12 Saint Etienne – Sylvie *
This would have been the single of the week had Carleen Anderson‘s song notcharted this week.
I thought this band had decided to call it a day when “He’s On The Phone” madeNo.11 in November 1995, and they released a greatest hits album, and SarahCracknell released her own single, “Anymore” (No.39, Sep 96), but I’m pleasedthat they’ve changed their mind and are back in the charts.
7 Aaron Carter – Crazy Little Party Girl :O ===
Younger brother of the Backpassage Boys’ Nick Carter, and worryingly notchingup a second UK Top 10 hit with more inane rubbish.
3 Will Smith – Gettin’ Jiggy With It
Now here’s a turn up for Smith’s books. After getting another smash-hit No.1with “Men In Black”, things looked definitely black when “Just Cruisin'”,the follow-up, made No.25 and then dropped out within a couple of weeks.
“Gettin’ Jiggy With It” follows the trend of “Men In Black”, by copying anothersong for their background music, the name of it escapes me at the moment though. It’s okay, but nothing special, and definitely not worthy of a Top 3 position.
1 (NEW) Aqua – Doctor Jones :O === *1st Week at No.1*
And something definitely not worthy of the top slot is the second singlefrom Aqua, which has as much musical intellectual capacity as “Barbie Girl”.

Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997
6. Finlay Quaye – Sunday Shining
Finlay Quaye, uncle to “trip-hop”-star Tricky, released four singles lastyear, although the first one, “Ultra Simulation EP” was a flop in February.
Then his first hit, “Sunday Shining” made No.16 in June, and is a cover of aBob Marley song which I’d not previously heard. This was followed up inSeptember with “Even After All”, making No.10, and a No.29 hit in Novemberfor “It’s Great When We’re Together”, and all the hits came from hisdebut album, “Maverick A Strike”, also released last year.
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
