    CHART TIME !

  • (* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

14 new entries this week, 0 climbers, 1 non-mover (Celine Dion at 2)and 25 going down.

Big fallers include Will Mellor (5 to 18), Ocean Colour Scene (12 to 31),Martha Wash featuring RuPaul (21 to 35) and Sandy B (20 to 36).

Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    32 – Maria Nayler – Naked and Sacred *

One of the best-selling singles of Xmas 96 was “One and One” – music by RobertMiles, and vocals by Maria Nayler. Now, over a year after the success of thatcomes Maria‘s first solo single.

While it’s a very good, and slow, tune, it’s also a cover version of a songused by ex-Willson Phillips member Chynna Phillips, when it made No.62 in Feb1996. Perhaps Maria shouldn’t have tried to kickstart her solo career witha song that mis-fired originally.

25 – Hinda Hicks – If You Want Me

Second single from Hinda, following “I Wanna Be Your Lady” which made No.109just before Xmas. This one though has actually had some promotion, mostlyinvolving a certain Phil Collins.

An interview on VH1 showed her saying she sent her demo tape to him, and hethen gave her a list of record companies to write to. Was it as simple as that,or was that her in his promo video for “Wear My Hat”, which flopped last yearat No.43.

Anyway, the single itself is very run-of-the-mill, and as such is suitableTop 40 material, but also incredibly dull, sounding too similar to Brownstone‘s“If You Love Me”.

    23 – Steven Houghton – Truly :O ===

Second single from one of “London Burning”‘s new recruits, and a dire cover ofLionel Richie‘s love song, which was also promoted in the last episode ofthe recent series.

The end of the last series saw a bus depot go up in flames, and it looked likeSteven Houghton was about to be one of the casualities, which would have beena good way to end the series and gain a big following for the next series inthe autumn.

Then the programme makers decide to ruin the whole thing by tacking on agooey love scene of him in a hospital bed, with his girlfriend making anappearance, and then as they smooched, so his new song played over the top.A tacky ending with added blatant publicising of his latest ‘work’.

The makers of the show ought to be ashamed of themselves, but then so shouldthe makers of the rapidly-declining “Casualty”, the latest series of whichfinished with a lousy two-parter in which Baz and Charlie finally tied theknot. As the band had done a runner, it was left up to the cast to badlysing a cover of “Everlasting Love”, with the lead vocals taken by receptionist, played by Rebecca Wheatley, who interestingly isn’t on the cover of the single, although one or two cast members who have now left, are.

    22 – Iggy Pop – The Passenger (R) *

One of Iggy’s best songs finally gets a release after never making anappearance in the Top 75 before.

It’s being used in a TV advert (I forget which one), but has had no airplayso will probably drop down next week.

16 – Finley Quaye – Your Love Gets Sweeter *

Brit Award winner of the “Best Male Vocal” category, and his fourth chart hitfrom the album, “Maverick A Strike”. I didn’t think this upbeat, acoustic songwould do very well, but thankfully the public have taken notice.

The video shows Finley and a friend driving through several UK locationswith the location name listed at the bottom of the screen, although if you’rewatching on “The Chart Show”, this info is usually obliterated by uselesstrivia. One of the first locations is in Manchester’s Moss Side area. If you’rewondering why the place is such a tip, then the reason that those peoplepassing through the area tip all their rubbish into the street is just to makethe dull place look a bit more colourful 🙂

    15 – Metallica – The Unforgiven II *

Metallica can’t seem to put a foot wrong, always making the Top 30 withsingles released over the last 10 years since August 1997’s “$5.98 EP – GarageDays Revisted”.

My favourite track of theirs, in similar fashion to U2, is called “One”,although for their track they drew inspiration from the film, “Johnny Got HisGun”.

This new single is the follow-up to 1991’s “Unforgiven”, and has a good tunerunning through it. Just a shame that it’s getting sod all airplay, and assuch is probably destined for a position outside of the Top 40 within the nextcouple of weeks.

9 (6) Another Level – Be Alone No More *

Another boy band in the charts, although when I heard this R&B-tinged song,I realised it’s actually rather good.

    8 – Robyn – Show Me Love *

Another newcomer to the chart is Robyn from Sweden with a foot-tapping popsong which is fairly ordinary, but the constant neat and the multi-layeredvoice during the chorus make for a song which is getting plenty of airplayand a Top 10 chart placing.

    7 – LeAnn Rimes – How Do I Live

Has country music arrived in the UK? Following fellow country music starShania Twain into the Top 10 is 17-year-old LeAnn Rimes who won the BestNewcomer award in last year’s Country Music Awards, while another countrymusic singer, Trisha Yearwood, received the award for Best Single at theGrammys with the same single!

4 – Space featuring Cerys Matthews – The Ballad of Tom Jones * !!!

Easily the best single of the week is this superbly-crafted ‘ballad of hate’from Liverpool’s Space, who have surely stamped their definitive mark onBritish Pop, and Cerys Matthews, lead singer of Catatonia, who recently hadtheir biggest hit single to date with the excellent, “Mulder And Scully”.

“The Ballad of Tom Jones” is about a couple who were on the verge of killingeach other to keep themselves sane, as their relationship had become so bad,but it was only by one of them accidentally turning the radio on and thesubsequent sound of a Tom Jones record which cooled their anger instantly.

If that sounds like a completely unworkable scenario then you couldn’t bemore wrong. With Tommy and Cerys singing alternate lines about how they’d liketo maim each other, and then when their hate subsides they own up to buying his’greatest hits’ album.

Definitely one of those songs you need to check out!

    1 (NEW) Madonna – Frozen * *1st Week at No.1*

Maddie’s first song since her 3-pronged assault on the charts with songs from“Evita” is basically a love song, but has more in the way of atmosphere thanits lyrical content.

I’ve heard three versions of this, the best one being the video version whichstarts slowly and subtley brings in some well-chosen dance beats halfwaythrough.

The second version I’ve heard is dreadful. While it’s not a greatdeal different, it suffers badly by trying to spice up the first part byadding a regular beat every half-line which sounds like the echoing effectof two iron bars being struck together. The third version is just a speeded-upversion of the first one, but presumably with the vocals re-recorded so theyscan properly without being speeded-up and sounding like the Smurfs.

This is now the sixth single in a row to go straight in at No.1, and the listlooks like this :

  • 1. Oasis – All Around The World
  • 2. Usher – You Make Me Wanna…
  • 3. Aqua – Doctor Jones
  • 4. Celine Dion – My Heart Will Go On
  • 5. Cornershop – Brimful of Asha
  • 6. Madonna – Frozen

    Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997

    10. U2 – Staring At The Sun

Second single from their “Pop” album, and it made No.3 when released lastApril. Clever lyrics put to a slow tune brought this to my attention andin my mind made it feel like last year’s equivalent of “One” which I alsoloved.

Four other singles made it to the chart last year: Discotheque, which wasrubbish but made No.1; Last Night On Earth, which was average; while Pleaseand If God Will Send His Angels were excellent, and they all made the Top 10except for “If God..” which made No.12.

U2‘s success was made complete by winning this year’s Brits 98 InternationalGroup award.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
