Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

56 Les Rhythmes Digitales featuring Nik Kershaw – Sometimes * !!!

I’d never heard a Les Rhythmes Digitales track before this, partly having beenput off with a poster I’d seen for the album featuring someone who looked likeactor Brendan Fraser having a bad hair day.

Then a few days ago I heard this on Radio 2 of all places, but they never saidwho it was (AAARGH! I HATE IT WHEN A RADIO STATION DOES THAT!), but I couldtell it was Nik Kershaw singing “Sometimes” a lot and I thought it was one ofhis recent solo songs which criminally flopped yet again. He hasn’t done wellsince the release of his “Radio Musicola” album. I remember that spent 4 weeksin the Network chart before dropping out of the Top 75, but the tape didn’tleave my walkman for months.

Seeing this in the charts now I ought to check out Les Rhythmes Digitales’album, but it’s a shame it hasn’t had any airplay elsewhere as it could havebeen a big hit, even if it sounds more like an album track than a high-profilesingle and it could have rejuvinated the career of Mr. Kershaw.

    28 Cast – Magic Hour
25 Culture Club – Your Kisses Are Charity

Both of these are follow-up singles to recent hits, but they’re both so dulland boring. Why? Was no-one listening when they played it back?

15 Dope Smugglaz – Double Double Dutch

Those around 16 years ago will remember that offbeat Sex Pistols guru MalcolmMcLaren had his biggest solo hit ever when “Double Dutch” made No.3 in July1983, a song based on a type of skipping competition that went on to featurein the Olympics.

Now we get a remix. It was fine when I first heard it as I thought it wasMcLaren doing something himself, but then I found it’s just another cheesyone-off dance band with fuck-all where their ideas should be. Rasp!

3 (4) DJ Jurgen presents Alice Deejay – Better off Alone *

This is one of those dance tunes, like ATB’s “9pm (Till I Come)”, which focusesmore on the tune than the lyrics and also a tune that I’ve heard many-a-timewithout knowing who it was, but then telling me wouldn’t have made much impactanyway.

A combination of a dance beat, minimal lyrics and a tune that sounds like acar alarm on the fritz and you’re all set for a Top 5 hit.

1 Ronan Keating – When You Say Nothing At All :O === *1st Week at No.1*

First solo single for the Boyzone frontman and it’s one of the love themesfrom the popular Hugh Grant film, Notting Hill, another being Elvis Costello’srecording of “She”, and it’s clear that Ronan’s looking for a solo careerin the way that he’s launched a single on his own, is looking to present TVseries, with one already under his belt, and he’s branching out on his own asmanager to another Oirish band, Westlife, even if all that he’s doing iscomplete crap.

This is the 21st single to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Fatboy Slim – Praise You
  • 2. 911 – A Little Bit More
  • 3. Offspring – Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • 4. Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Harden – You Don’t Know Me
  • 5. Blondie – Maria
  • 6. Lenny Kravitz – Fly Away
  • 7. Britney Spears – Baby One More Time
  • 8. Boyzone – When The Going Gets Tough
  • 9. B*witched – Blame It On The Weatherman
  • 10. Mr Oizo – Flat Beat
  • 11. Martine McCutcheon – Perfect Moment
  • 12. Westlife – Swear It Again
  • 13. Backpassage Boys – I Like It That Way
  • 14. Boyzone – You Needed Me
  • 15. Shanks and Bigfoot – Sweet Like Chocolate
  • 16. Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
  • 17. S Club 7 – Bring It All Back
  • 18. Vengaboys – Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!
  • 19. ATB – 9pm (Till I Come)

    Dominator’s Top 50 of 1998

    32. Lenny Kravitz: If You Can’t Say No

Lenny Kravitz came to the fore in 1990 with the exceptional single andalbum, “Let Love Rule”, but apart from the occasional hit such as “It Ain’tOver Til It’s Over” and “Are You Gonna Go My Way” in the early 90’s, the publichave largely ignored Lenny’s music until earlier this year when “Fly Away”made No.1 after being used in a car advert.

The current album “5” charted at No.18 in May last year and has done bettersince the top-slot hit, but the first two singles, which missed the Top 40,were the hypnotic “If You Can’t Say No” (No.48, May 98) and followed up by”I Belong To You” (No.75, October 98).

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
