    POP NEWS

    Nothing to report this week.

Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    37 Rialto – Monday Morning 5:19

Excellent first Top 40 hit at last for this band, who performed this onTFI Friday last week. Deserved a Top 10 placing like that from Embrace.

    33 Sundance – Sundance

Average dance tune, which I thought would’ve gone in higher.

27 North and South – Breathing

Third single from the teenypop band with no talent, going for a slower song, but getting further and further lower chart positions.

18 Bee Gees – Still Waters (Run Deep)

Their first hit of the year, Alone, made No.5 in late February, and theyreceived the Brits 97 Award for Outstanding Contribution at the time.

In June, the follow-up, I Could Not Love You More made No.14, and thendisappeared the following week.

Now their new single, a fairly average effort for the Bee Gees, makes onlyNo.18 on its first week out.

However, all of this is by the by after their performance on Clive AndersonTalks Back last week when the three brothers, Barry especially, couldn’t seethe funny side of Clive’s sarcasm, when after announcing that they used tobe called “Les Tossers”, Clive said, “You’ll always be Les Tossers to me”,and later when they mentioned an old song, “Don’t Forget To Remember”, Clivesaid, “I’ve forgotten it already”.

Barry said “You would wouldn’t you!”, and later followed with “We’re going downlike a storm aren’t we Clive? In fact I think I might just leave”. He gets up,so does a second one, later followed by a third. When Barry left, he pointedat Clive and said, “You’re the tosser pal”. It then took a while before Cliverealised they weren’t coming back…

8 Embrace – All You Good Good People EP

Third Top 40 hit for Embrace, and a reissue for the one that got away, onlymaking No.157 back in February. Excellent powerful song, and getting a fairbit of airplay.

    2 Natalie Imbruglia – Torn *

Debut single for the ex-Neighbours star where she played Beth Brennan, thenwith long hair, who left the show after her character married Brad Willis.

She quit to start a singing career, and it’s taken about three years, but thefirst results has struck a No.2 hit instantly, even though it was originallydue out two weeks ago. Perhaps a good thing they did put it back, probablybecause the Spice Girls put their record back to the same week. They could’vehad a No.1 if they hadn’t reckoned with a force stronger than the Spice Girls, namely Aqua.

    1 (1) Aqua – Barbie Girl *2nd Week at No.1*

First ever hit, and this week knocking the Spice Girls off their perch aftera week, for this weird band with a black-haired girl as ‘Barbie’, thepopular young girls doll, singing an endless chanting chorus of :

  • I’m a Barbie Girl,
  • In my Barbie world,
  • Happy plastic, it’s fantastic.
  • You can brush my hair,
  • Undress me everywhere,
  • Imagination, life is your creation.

Yes, it’s catchy, but so is impetigo.

    Dominator’s Top 50 of 1997

    45. Sting – I Was Brought To My Senses

Four top 40 hits last year for Sting, but this was, for me, the best of themmaking No.31 in September.

Others released were “Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot”, “You Still Touch Me”,and a ‘duet’ with Pato Banton on a revised Police original, “Spirits in theMaterial World”. Also, after doing a spot on TFI Friday, he released an EPof songs from that programme, the surprisingly-named, “Live at TFI Friday EP”.

Rounding off the year came another single, “I’m So Happy That I Can’t StopCrying”, but alas it didn’t make the Top 40.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
