31 – Babybird – Bad Old Man * !!!

Best single of the week is the lowest of my selected new entries.

I couldn’t stand “You’re Gorgeous”, their best-known single to date, butthe more downbeat followup, “Candy Girl”, was a million times better.

“Bad Old Man” is as downbeat as it gets and is about outrageous chat showhosts such as Jerry Springer who invite outrageous guests onto their shows.Such examples of the guests come in the chorus, with bizarre lines like :“He put razor blades in the ice-cream, and shot a paedophile in a wet dream.”

Definitely one of the least commercial songs around at the moment and,unfortunately, not getting much airplay.

29 – Freakpower – No Way *

Freakpower‘s first hit since their No.1 in 1993 with “Turn On, Tune In,Cop Out”, is as funky an affair, but despite getting some airplay hasn’t doneas well as expected.

22 – Aretha Franklin – A Rose Is Still A Rose :O ===

Dire music rears its ugly head, this one being because it’s a collaborationwith Lauryn Hill from The Fugees, a band guaranteed to ruin any record, althoughthis one didn’t have much going for it in the first place.

13 – Bluetones – If… *

Follow-up to “Solomon Bites The Worm”, and another top pop tune. I would’vethought this was guaranteed a Top 10 placing though.

11 – Queen Pen & Eric Williams – All My Love :O ===

One of the worst singles of the week is this pointless piece of trash.

Like the Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man talked all over a rehashed “Say What YouWant” from Texas, this does the same to Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much”.

I just don’t get the point of it. Anyone could make this piece of crap.Just put Luther’s song on in the background and at the end of every line sung,just mumble “Yeah, ok”, “Go on, go on”, or “Uh, uh, uh”.

Anyone who actually bought it deserves to be put down as much as the “artists”who made it.

2 – Madonna – Ray Of Light :O ===

Second single, and title track from her current album.

I loved “Frozen” which made No.1, but this is just an energetic mess with anequally migrane-inducing video to boot.

1 (NEW) All Saints – Under The Bridge/Lady Marmalade :O ===*1st Week at No.1*

Originally scheduled for a January release, this double-A side was pushed backbecause, at the start of the year, “Never Ever” would not leave the Top 10.

Both promos have been given the big push by being shown together before somescreenings of the current Quentin Tarantino film, “Jackie Brown”.

Now, onto the songs :

“Under The Bridge” is a dire cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers classic, givena slight hip-hop treatment combined with making the whole song sound like avery downbeat affair. The opening and closing of the original song was also aguitar masterpiece, but this version has completely trashed all that.

“Lady Marmalade” is a fairly standard cover of the 70’s classic by Labelle,a group fronted by Patti Labelle. Not quite as bad as the UTB, but it’s UTBwhich is getting more airplay, alas.

19. Catch – Bingo

A new single from a new band, this was Catch‘s only hit last year, and a songthat has it’s slow parts, but when it jumps into the chorus (which ends with“Bingo“) it speeds up. It received a fair bit of airplay as well, so it’s ashame it didn’t get any higher in October 97.
