The initial bit :

In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.

    CHART TIME !

    (* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

15 new entries this week, one climber (Gala from 4 to 2) and one non-moverat the top again.

    Big fallers include U2 (10 to 29), Universal (19 to 37).

    40 David McAlmont – Look At Yourself * !!!

It’s been over two years since David McAlmont came to the fore with Butlerwith a No.8 since in June 95 with “Yes”, still a radio hit today. Since then, they had a No.17 hit with “You Do” in November 95, an album, “The Sound ofMcAlmont and Butler”, and last year David McAlmont had a minor hit in May 96with Ultramarine, “Hymn” at No.65.

The new single is very much in the “Yes”-territory, and has been plugged manya time on the radio. As a result, I’m surprised that it hasn’t gone further.

    18 North and South – Tarantino’s New Star :O ==

I’m even more surprised that people are buying this band’s records. Formedas part of a TV programme, No Sweat, North and South had a hit recently at No.7with the dreadful, “I’m a Man, Not a Boy”. I didn’t think they could get anyworse, but they have.

“Tarantino’s New Star” is a sad excuse for a single, being little more thana chant of “Who Do You Think You Are, Tarantino’s New Star?”, etc. etc andagain, etc.

6 Notorious BIG – Mo Money Mo Problems :O ===

On a similar note, here’s another sad excuse. The Notorius BIG infects theUK chart with another disease, this time with Diana Ross’s “I’m Coming Out”playing sort-of in the background, and loads of rap crap over the top of it.

“Mo Money Mo Problems” ? He’s not got any “mo” problems. He’s dead, and hissingles are only selling because of that.

“Mo Money Mo Problems” ? Mo crap in the charts more like!

    5 Texas – Black Eyed Boy *

Third single from Texas‘s “White on Blonde” album, and another smash-hiton their hands. Their career was resurrected thanks to Chris Evans plugging them24 hours a day (it seemed) on his Radio 1 show, and TFI Friday.

Thankfully, the run of singles from this band isn’t a case of “one good one,and a lot of average stuff” that a lot of bands turn out, but a series offirst class tunes.

1 (1) Puff the Magic Dragon and Faith Healer – I’ll Be Missing You *6th Week at No.1*

    Again it’s No.1. Again it’s still crap.

    Dominator’s Top 50 of 1997

    32. Ocean Colour Scene – The Riverboat Song

The Riverboat Song, You’ve Got It Bad, The Day We Caught The Train, andThe Circle.

It was very difficult to pick one of the four, and originally I picked “TheCircle”, but just changed it to “The Riverboat Song” which made No.15 inFebruary last year.

For anyone who can’t remember how it goes, it the rockier of the two themesused for TFI Friday.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
