In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, pickingout the Top 10 first. During 1999, I’ll be going through the list one by onestarting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.
This week : 11 new entries, 0 climbers, 0 non-movers & 29 downers.CHART TIME !
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
13 new entries :
Dance cover of the Van Halen classic. Haven’t heard this, but if it’s anythinglike their “Kung Fu Fighting” cover, I don’t want to.
21 Bon Jovi – Real LifeOh dear. Once they were a regular stalwart of the Top 5 with new singles, butlet’s hope this signals the end of their dry MOR run.
11 Another Level – Be Alone No More (remix)Re-released for charidee. Take my advice and leave the single alone in theshops.
7 Catatonia – Dead From The Waist Down *I’ve only heard this once, when they were on TFI Friday, and it’s another toptrack. Certainly a lot better than most things in the chart.
4 Various Artists – Thank Abba For The MusicDid you see the Brits in February? I’m surprised they’ve taken so long torelease this, but it’s the Abba tribute you heard then, sung by Steps, Billie,Cleopatra and other one-name acts.
1 Mr Oizo – Flat Beat :O === *1st Week at No.1*Who is Mr. Oizo? Seen the Levi’s ads with the puppet tapping away to amonotonous drum beat? That’s the one. The puppet is “Flat Eric” and he isapparently the latest trend, such that everything containing his image, eg.T-shirts, are the hottest property in town.
Sad. Sad. Sad.
This is the 10th single to go straight in at No.1.

Dominator’s Top 50 of 1998
15. The Cardigans – My Favourite GameThis track hung around for two months, but I thought it would have done betterthan it did, making No.14 in October last year. A fast-paced tune that’s boundto stop the radio station playing “Love Fool” AGAIN! I wish they’d dump thatone and play “Sick And Tired” instead. Much better.
About the video for “My Favourite Game”, when I saw it on MTV it just showedsinger Nina driving her car down the highway, but there’s a better promo (fourin all I understand) which features plenty of car crashes, ending with Nina”car-surfing”, resulting in her crashing and landing on the ground. Perhapsthat’s the reason for her plaster cast.
It was followed up with “Erase/Rewind” (No.7, Mar 99) which was okay, but notreally special and a rather dull video.
Next question: why does Nina sometimes look a complete babe, and at other times, when she’s being interviewed, look like the complete opposite?
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
Bye for now,
