The initial bit :

In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.

This week : 18 new entries, 0 climbers, 1 non-movers & 21 downers

It’s goodbye to : Pavement (40), Busta Rhymes (39), Grace (38), Bruce Springsteen (37), Kavana (36), 2 Pac and Snoop Doggy Dogg (35), Brand New Heavies (34), Tony Toni Tone featuring DJ Quik (33), Silver Sun (32), Smoke City (31), Keith Sweat featuring Athena Cage (30), Tricky (29), Kenickie (27), Faithless (26), DJ Supreme (24), Blur (23), Orbital (22), Snoop Doggy Dogg (18).

And hello to : Tin Tin Out featuring Tony Hadley (36), Jay-Z featuring Foxy Brown (31), Prefab Sprout (30), Hurricane No.1 (29), 3 Colours Red (28), Nuyorican Soul featuring James Brown (26), Goodfellaz (25), Gene (22), Paul McCartney (19), Dru Hill (16), Mansun (15), Ant and Dec (14), Foo Fighters (12), Red 5 (11), Jamiroquai (6), Seahorses (3), George Michael (2), Gary Barlow (1).

CHART TIME !

(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

18 new entries this week…again! That makes it the fifth time since my chartanalysis began in July 1994, and the second time in two weeks. More testamentto the fact that something needs to be done about the rigging of the chart bythe record companies!

I mentioned this last week. For those who missed it, while the chart doesreflect the sales accurately, those at fault are the shops and the recordcompanies. Why? Because when the record companies sell singles to the shops, they’re sold at just over UKP 2.00 apiece, but for established bands, the shopsare given a couple of extra freebies for EACH single sold : 3 for the price ofone. No wonder they sell for 99p or 1.99 in the first week out, hence gaininghigh chart entries. That’s the sort of practice that needs to be stopped.

This practice is also causing massive fallers in their second week out, this week’s biggest faller being the Notorius BIG from 10 to 32, althoughRepublica fell from 7 to 18, and Michael Jackson fell from No.1 to 8.

Other big fallers in their third week out include U2 from 17 to 34,Texas from 21 to 36, but James take the biscuit falling from 12 to 39.

30 Prefab Sprout – A Prisoner of the Past * !!!

The first single from Prefab Sprout in as long a time as I can remember, certainly the first since my charts began, but they easily make the best singleof the week this week with a song that is classic Prefab Sprout. The B-side(if a CD single can have a B-side is Paddy McAloon’s theme tune from ITV’sdrama “Where The Heart Is”)

However, I doubt that as good as it is, this single will go any further thanNo.30, and their biggest hit will remain the late 80’s singalong, “King ofRock And Roll”.

What I really hope they’ll do though, is re-release “Carnival 2000” in threeyears time…

19 Paul McCartney – Young Boy *

Like Prefab Sprout, this is Macca’s first entry ever into the chart since mycharts began, and taken from his new album, “Flaming Pie”.

It’s certainly a very good song, and it would have been nice to see it hitthe Top 10 first week out.

For fans of Macca, there’s an interactive online chat thingy happening on aWebsite somewhere (the paper I read didn’t give out the URL…duh!) on May 17thwhich will be covered by VH1.

15 Mansun – Taxloss *

With an opening line like, “I’ll be your tax-loss lover from Liverpool”,Mansun are certainly inventive.

This equal’s the peak position of last year’s “Wide Open Space”, which I muchpreferred, but doesn’t reach the heights of February’s “She Makes My NoseBleed” which peaked at No.9.

6 Jamiroquai – Alright *

A third single from Jason Kay’s current album, and another top tune to drive to,albeit slower than “Virtual Insanity” and “Cosmic Girl”.

4 Cardigans – Lovefool (Remix) (R) *

Defying the laws of the charts these days, the Cardigans spend a second weekat No.4.

Of course, the main reason it has been re-released is that it’s featured inthe new film, “Romeo and Juliet”. I can’t find any part of the single that’sbeen remixed though. However, none of it compares to their best ever track,“Sick and Tired”. I wish they’d re-release that.

3 Seahorses – Love is the Law *

The debut single for the Seahorses, although it’s not the first sniff of chartsuccess held by one of its band members, John Squire, ex-Stone Roses.

“Love is the Law” is an excellent single, is as far removed from anything thatthe Stone Roses ever did, and is the first single I’ve ever heard to givemention to the cinematic classic, “Strap on Sally” 😉

2 George Michael – Star People ’97 :O ===

Oh dear George what have you done. You made an excellent album, “Older”,released a string of classic hits all of which made the Top 3, and then youtake a soulful piece from the album and turn it on it head for the dance-happybrigade, and it stinks.

Still, at least he released this one in the right year. From “Listen WithoutPrejudice Vol.1”, “Freedom ’90” was written in 1989 and released as a singlein 1991 !

1 Gary Barlow – Love Won’t Wait *1st Week at No.1*

Not a bad follow-up to last June’s “Forever Love” which also made No.1, thisone being more of a poppy song.

There seems to be a trend developing with the singles from ex-Take Thatmembers. Both singles from Gary Barlow have gone straight in at No.1. RobbieWilliams’ have both gone in at No.2, and with Mark Owen, it’s No.3.

Gary Barlow will soon have an album out though, entitled “Open Road”, whichhe felt was a more positive title than “Empty Road”, the previous suggestion.

19. Cathy Dennis – West End Pad

A good pop tune, this one spent a week inside the Top 40 at No.25 last August, and wasn’t followed up until February this year (Waterloo Sunset, 11).

Cathy Dennis released a new album in March (Am I The Kind of Girl), but howcome her single releases are getting as rare as those from Supergrass?

The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the list, just mailme at Charts Request to tell me, but please specify whether you want the music charts and/or the widescreen video and laserdisc lists.

Bye for now,

Dominator
