    CHART TIME !

    (* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

15 new entries this week, 2 climbers (Dario G from 3 to 2, and Will Smith from9 to 8), 2 non-movers (one of which is Tina Moore at 11), and 21 going down.

Big fallers include U2 (7 to 26), No Doubt (16 to 33) andBoyz II Men (21 to 35).

Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    38 (33) Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life *

Now in its third week in the charts, it’s a rare track that can stay in thelower ten of the charts for a three week run selling constantly.

30 Jam – The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had To Swallow) (R) *

Despite a load of re-issues in January 83 after their last single, “BeatSurrender” made No.1 in December 82, the last time the Jam were in the chartswas when “That’s Entertainment” made No.57 in June 1991 as their 21-track”Snap!” Best of album had 3 tracks removed and one added to make “Greatest Hits”which made No.2 in the album charts.

Presumably this has been issued due to the recent 5-track CD release whichcovers all of the Jam tracks ever made. The other tracks on the single are“That’s Entertainment” and “The Butterfly Collector”.

29 East 57th St. featuring Donna Allen – Saturday *

Mindless, endless dance track, and the repitious line, “I Just Can’t Wait TillSaturday”, but one of the few which I actually like.

Donna Allen‘s only hits prior to this were “Serious” (No.8, Apr 87),“Joy And Pain” (No.10, June 89) and “Real” (No.35, Jan 95).

    23 Catch – Bingo * !!!

A new single from a new band, and one that has it’s slow parts, but when itjumps into the chorus (which ends with “Bingo”) it speeds up. It’s getting afair bit of airplay as well, so it’s a shame it didn’t get any higher.

21 Paul Weller – Friday Street

Another single from his album, “Heavy Soul”, but what’s the odds on gettingtwo entries into the Top 40 at the same time?

16 Seahorses – Love Me and Leave Me *

Third single from the lead singer of the Stone Roses, and another goodone, but perhaps too repetitive to do as well.

    6 Lighthouse Family – Raincloud :O ===

What is it with the Lighthouse Family who now seem to sell many recrords, buteach one of them being so incredibly dull?

1 (1) Elton John – Something About The Way You Look / Candle in the Wind 1997 * *4th Week at No.1*

It was inevitable that thing song would go straight in at No.1.

For those with their head in a hole for the past two weeks, Diana, Princess ofWales and her then-beau, Dodi Al-Fayed, son of Harrodds boss, Mohammed Al-Fayed,were killed along with their driver in a horrific car crash in a Parisunderpass while being chased by French paparazzi. Who was to blame though? Thepress chasing them on motorbikes and taking photos of the dead and dying lyingin the car after the smash, or the driver allegedly going at 121 mph while overthree times the legal limit and on anti-depressants? Time will tell.

Anyway, only six weeks after the death of fashion designer Gianni Versace, where Diana was comforting Elton John, he rewrote his classic tribute to silverscreen legend Marilyn Monroe, and put it on the back of his new superb single,“Something About The Way You Look”.

Only going on sale on Saturday 13th September, this went platinum in a day, selling out within hours of all 600,000 copies released in shops, with moredue in on the Monday. This will probably be No.1 for weeks to come. I don’tthink it will stay No.1 all the way until Xmas, but it’ll climb back up to thetop to make it the Xmas No.1.

This is surprisingly only Elton John‘s second solo No.1. His first was acombination of two singles which flopped first time round. “Sacrifice / HealingHands” which made No.1 in June 90, and was his first single to be released withall the profits going to charity, with every single to come following suit.

He has had two duets go to No.1 though. “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” was No.1in July 76 with Kiki Dee, and later was redone duetting with male model Rupaul(No. 7, Feb 94). The second was with George Michael, a new version of “Don’tLet The Sun Go Down On Me” in December 91, their second collaboration, the firstbeing “Wrap Her Up” (No. 12, Dec 85).

This is the third song in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. Will Smith – Men In Black
  • 2. Verve – The Drugs Don’t Work
  • 3. Elton John – Something About The Way You Look / Candle in the Wind 1997

    Dominator’s Top 50 of 1997

    41. Sleeper – Nice Guy Eddie

One of the best sellers for Sleeper last year, this one made No.10, as did“Sale of the Century” before it, but the follow-up, “Statuesque” made justNo.17. Highlight of the year for the band came with lead-singer Louise Wener‘sappearance on Vic and Bob’s Shooting Stars.

The first single from their new album made No.28 last week. “She’s a Good Girl”deserved to do better though.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
