In the last chart of 1997, I posted my Top 50 singles of theyear, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1998, I’ll be going through thelist one by one.
This week : 12 new entries, 1 climbers, 1 non-movers & 26 downers.CHART TIME !
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
12 new entries this week :
Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…
38 LeAnn Rimes – Looking Through Your Eyes/CommitmentFollowing the hit cover version of “How Do I Live” which hasn’t left thecharts since it entered over 6 months ago, and this week has just gone upagain from No.35 to No.32, this new single does incredibly badly, probablybecause the radio stations haven’t stopped playing her first Top 40 foray.
My girlfriend won’t be happy because she thinks “Commitment” is brilliant.Personally, I’d only take Trisha Yearwood’s cover of “How Do I Live” andthat’s only when I’m watching “Con Air” in which it features.
35 Gomez – Whippin’ Piccadilly *Third time lucky for Gomez following “78 Stone Wobble” (No.44, April) and”Get Myself Arrested” (No.45, June) and the promo video (another good excusefor a very wide widescreen shot) is doing the rounds aplenty on VH1 at themoment.
20 Tin Tin Out featuring Shelley Nelson – SometimesLacklustre follow-up to the decent cover of the 10,000 Maniacs‘ “Here’s WhereThe Story Ends”. Again, it’s a case of the radio stations still playing thefirst hit instead of this one.
17 Dario G & David Bowie – Sunmachine * !!!It took me a while to warm to “Carnival De Paris” but it took no time to warmto this one when I first heard it two months ago. I haven’t heard it for awhile, but the combination of a good dance tune and David Bowie can’t failto impress, making this the single of the week.
12 Aerosmith – I Don’t Want To Miss A ThingTaken from the soundtrack to “Armageddon”, they’re only on the album becauselead singer Steven Tyler’s daughter plays Bruce Willis’ daughter in the film.Personally, I’d have rather put someone else in that role (Kate Winsletperhaps) but then that’s just me.
9 Sheryl Crow – My Favourite Mistake *For another track from an album that’s had a few taken from it already, thishas gone in surprisingly high. It’s a good song, and from the promo videoMs. Crow proves she’s looking good too 🙂
4 Jennifer Paige – Crush *Haven’t heard this much, but from what I remember of this US-crossover hit,it’s worth a * from me.
2 Five – Everybody Get Up :O ===After hearing their previous hits a few times, I grew to like them, but thisblatant murder of Joan Jett‘s classic “I Love Rock N Roll” is dire beyondbelief.
1 (NEW) All Saints – Bootie Call :O === *1st Week at No.1*Single Number Four for the All Saints and they get worse as they go on.
A “Bootie Call”, or “Booty Call” as a recent US film was titled, is a phonecall a girl makes to a man asking him to come round for sex.
Despite the fact that it wouldn’t take a phone call for Natalie Appleton toconvince me to pop round, this single never really gets going and near thestart it sounds like they’re playing the Atari VCS classic “Yars’ Revenge” !
This is the ninth single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :
The chances are that next week Robbie Williams will be No.1 with his newsingle “Millenium” which will make Ten No.1’s in a row, equalling the recordset in the chart at week ending April 13th 1996 when the Prodigy rounded off10 singles going in at No.1 in a row which began with Shaggy. August 24th :NOVEMBER :
Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997
37. Portishead – All Mine
Of last year’s self-titled second album, Portishead have released threesingles from it, the first one being “All Mine” (No.8, Sept 97).
Following 1995’s “Dummy” album, which brought this excellent British bandto the attention of the nation, their first two singles defined their offbeatstyle, both making No.13 with Glory Box (Jan 95) and a re-release for SourTimes (Apr 95).
This new single went higher than the first two in a stroke, and is indescribableapart from that it’s slow, and contains sampled sound in the background makingit sound like it’s come from a scratched record, coupled with a video whichfrom what I’ve seen comprises of little more than a girl doing the singing, and you have a bizarre, radio-unfriendly, but classic tune that is Portisheadwhich packs a bigger punch in one chorus than most bands manage in a wholesong.
The follow-ups were “Over” (No.25, Nov 97) and “Only You” (March 98).
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
Bye for now,
