Back with a vengeance are Blondie, and I hope this time it’s fronted byDEBBIE Harry, and not ‘Deborah’. In either case, this rocking hit puts paid tothe wilderness years in the early 1990’s after the ‘Greatest Hits’ album wasreleased and Debbie Harry resorted to remixes, including the dire 1994 remixof their best ever song, “Atomic”, the original of which reminds me of thefilm “Trainspotting” after its use in that, and her “acting” appearance ina crappy PC game.

7. Madonna – Drowned World/Substitute For Love

Maddie came back to the charts last year to prove that she can still hack itwith the best of them. “Frozen” (No.1, Mar 98) was her first song since her3-pronged assault on the charts with songs from “Evita” and was basically a lovesong, but has more in the way of atmosphere than its lyrical content.

I’ve heard three versions of this, the best one being the video version whichstarts slowly and subtley brings in some well-chosen dance beats halfwaythrough.

The second version I’ve heard is dreadful. While it’s not a greatdeal different, it suffers badly by trying to spice up the first part byadding a regular beat every half-line which sounds like the echoing effectof two iron bars being struck together. The third version is just a speeded-upversion of the first one, but presumably with the vocals re-recorded so theyscan properly without being speeded-up and sounding like the Smurfs.

The followup was the title track of her album, “Ray of Light” (No.2, May 98)which I described at the time as “an energetic mess with an equallymigrane-inducing video to boot”, but after a while it really grew on me.

Her Xmas single was the ballad, “The Power Of Goodbye” (No.6, Dec 98), butthe single of the year for me from Madonna was another ballad,“Drowned World/Substitute For Love” which made No.10 in September.The promo video for this caused controversy because it featured Madonna beingchased by papparazi on motorbikes, just like Princess Di. I don’t think itfeatured her bed-hopping with the likes of James Hewitt and Dodi Fayed though…
