Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

44 Sheryl Crow – Steve McQueenI’m glad this did so badly, but it’s a surprise it did. It’s a dire trackthat partially throws in the movie star’s name as a comparative referenceand for no other reason. One for the fans of Richard Allinson on Radio 2.

29 Gary Numan – RipOnly heard this once. Sounds an interesting piece of electronica whichis long since missed from the charts.

15 Idlewild – American EnglishBetter than their last poor single, and this starts slowly and builds well.

2 Red Hot Chili Peppers – By the WayNot a bad track, but far from their best (eg. Under the Bridge, Scar Tissue),and reminds me a lot of another track of theirs, The Other Side.

1 Elvis – A Little Less Conversation (remix) *4th Week at No.1*

Decent track used in the Nike football adverts with Eric Cantona.Typically, though, it shoots straight to No.1 when it doesn’t deserve to.

This is the 14th single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. Aaliyah – More Than a Woman
  • 2. George Harrison – My Sweet Lord (R)
  • 3. Enrique Iglesias – Hero
  • 4. Westlife – World of Our Own
  • 5. Will Young – Anything is Possible/Evergreen
  • 6. Gareth Gates – Unchained Melody
  • 7. Oasis – The Hindu Times
  • 8. Sugababes – Freak Like Me
  • 9. Holly Valance – Kiss Kiss
  • 10. Ronan Keating – If Tomorrow Never Comes
  • 11. Liberty X – Just a Little

Dominator’s Top 50 of 2001The following is my look back at my Top 50 of 2001.

28. Grandaddy – The Crystal LakeMaking only No.38 in February last year, this re-release was very 80s, veryELO and very very good. Shame there was nothing else to follow them into thecharts afterwards.Review copyright © Dominic Robinson, 2002.
