    CHART TIME !

    (* – my current favourites)
    (!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
    (:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

    A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

    12 new entries this week, 4 re-entries and 2 climbers (Tina Moore – 11to 9, and Puff Daddy – 6 to 5).

    Big fallers include Ocean Colour Scene (5 to 20), Ginuwine (10 to 24),Radiohead (8 to 29), Fugees (18 to 33), No Mercy (16 to 36) and Bentley RhythmAce (17 to 38).

    Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    35 Eels – Your Lucky Day In Hell

    After two excellent Top 10 singles, Novacaine for the Soul (10) and Susan’sHouse (9), this third single is another good track, but perhaps it’s down tothe fact that I’ve only heard this once on the radio, that it hasn’t beenheard by many people and hence has made a very low chart entry.

    30 Echo & The Bunnymen – I Want To Be There When You Come

    Second single from their new album, Evergreen, “I Want To Be There When YouCome” is another slow, moody piece and pretty good, but also getting littleairplay.

    Similarly, this one also enters low, after the No.8 peak of “Nothing LastsForever”.

    26 Ce Ce Peniston – Finally (remix) (R) :O ===

    She last had a hit in August 1994 with Hit By Love (33), but this track wasa minor hit when it first came out making No.29 in 1991, and then a bigger hitmaking No.2 in March 1992, even if it went on and on and on.

    This re-release is an even more dancified version, and thus unnecessary.Still, someone must be buying it…

    21 Led Zeppelin – Whole Lotta Love *

    Last year, this Led Zepplin classic was trashed by Goldbug along with the Pearland Dean advertising theme, when they reached No.3 in January 96 with theirdance version of “Whole Lotta Love”.

    The guitar solo riff was also bootlegged by the Comic Strip ‘band’ Bad News(aka Adrian Edmondson as Vim Fuego, Rik Mayall as Colin Grigson, Nigel Planeras Den Dennis, and Peter Richardson as Spider Webb) when each of the bandintroduced themselves with their own ‘break’, Vim trying to pass off thisas his own.

    It was also used at one time as the theme tune to the little-known BBC1 popmusic show, “Top of the Pops”. 🙂

    Why, do you ask, does this single NOT have an (R) for re-release? It’sbecause it’s the first Led Zepplin single ever released in the UK. Yes,they never released any singles when they originated, only albums. I couldn’tbelieve that when I first heard it either 🙂

    17 Chicane – Offshore 97 (R) *

    It made No.14 last December, and here it is again. I’ve not heard it playedin its new form…unless it sounds just like the last one 🙂

    16 Kavana – Crazy Chance 97 (R) :O ===

    Kavana‘s first single “Crazy Chance”, written by ex-Take That’sHoward Donald, made No.35 last May, and now he’s hit the big time, and becomeone of the UK pop industry’s top gay acts, it gets a more uptempo re-release.

    10 Finlay Quaye – Even After All *

    The third single for Finlay, uncle to trip-hop soloist Tricky, following theflop “Ultra Simulation EP” in Febraury, and the excellent No.16 June hit,“Sunday Shining”, is a more laidback affair than “Sunday Shining”, and stillwell worth a listen.

    7 Cast – Live The Dream *

    In contrast to the more upbeat examples from their repetroire, Cast go fora slow and melodic tune, and very good it is too.

    6 (4) All Saints – I Know Where It’s At *

    I missed out this one last week, but have now heard it and it’s well worth alisten.

    More like a poppy version of Eternal, this is good radio fodder for blastingout of the car on a sunny day (although there’s precious few of those now).

    4 Hanson – Where’s The Love :O ===

    Bleah! Second song from the new Jackson 3, and follow-up to their first single,the catchy, but irritating “Mmmbop” which went straight in at No.1 in June.

    1 (NEW) Verve – The Drugs Don’t Work *1st Week at No.1*

    Second single from the Verve, who after a number of years of trying finallycame to the fore in June with the No.2 classic, “Bitter Suite Symphony”.

    Finding a song to top that would seem to be a hard task, especially as thisone didn’t quite hit home the first few times I heard it, and I thought it wouldonly be a minor hit. I’ve since heard it a number of times, and it’s definitelya grower.

    Chances are this may be deposed next week as Elton John‘s tribute to Diana,Princess of Wales, a new re-written version of “Candle in the Wind” played ather funeral on Sunday 7th September, goes on sale in shops this Saturday,13th September.

    This is the second song in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. Will Smith – Men In Black
  • 2. Verve – The Drugs Don’t Work

    Dominator’s Top 50 of 1997

    37. Chris Rea – Girl In A Sportscar

    Although a flop in terms of chart position, making No.81 in December 96, andNo.117 in May this year on its re-release, this song is taken from Chris Rea‘sown film that he wrote, “La Passione”, about his passion for racing car fromyears gone by.

    It was re-released in May when the film went on release in selected cinemas,with the video due out on sale in September 1997.

    Also released from the soundtrack album was a duet with Shirley Bassey,“Disco La Passione” which just missed the Top 40 by peaking at No.41 inNovember 1996.

    “Girl in a Sportscar” was heavily promoted at the time on Chris Evans‘ Radio 1morning show, and if you’ve never heard this single before..you haven’t lived.

    The end bit :

    Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
