In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, pickingout the Top 10 first. During 1999, I’ll be going through the list one by onestarting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.
This week : 13 new entries, 0 climbers, 1 non-movers & 26 downers.CHART TIME !
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
13 new entries :
If I’m correct, this single was written by Paul Simon, but then I was wrongin thinking that this would trounce the sales of the third single from theginger one.
1 Geri Halliwell – Lift Me Up *1st Week at No.1*Third single from her “Schizophonic” album and a rather dull one to boot. She’s swung the hype machine into action big-style this week by stating thatshe and media-mogul-wannabe Chris Evans are planning to get married.
The Sun said it best: “If Chris and Geri get married, then divorced, whowould get custody of the sycophants ?”
This is the 30th single to go straight in at No.1.

Dominator’s Top 50 of 1998
46. Space featuring Cerys Matthews – The Ballad of Tom JonesMaking No.4 in March last year, this was easily the best single of the week,a superbly-crafted ‘ballad of hate’ from Liverpool’s Space, who have surelystamped their definitive mark on British Pop, and Cerys Matthews, lead singerof Catatonia, who recently had their biggest hit single to date with theexcellent, “Mulder And Scully”.
“The Ballad of Tom Jones” is about a couple who were on the verge of killingeach other to keep themselves sane, as their relationship had become so bad,but it was only by one of them accidentally turning the radio on and thesubsequent sound of a Tom Jones record which cooled their anger instantly.
If that sounds like a completely unworkable scenario then you couldn’t bemore wrong. With Tommy and Cerys singing alternate lines about how they’d liketo maim each other, and then when their hate subsides they own up to buying his’greatest hits’ album.
Definitely one of those songs you need to check out!
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
Bye for now,
