A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
13 new entries this week, 1 climber (Celine Dion from 2 to 1), 1 non-mover(Shania Twain at 14) and 25 going down.
Big fallers include Robyn (8 to 16), Beenie Man (10 to 22), Finley Quaye(16 to 30), Will Mellor (18 to 33), Metallica (15 to 34) and Iggy Pop (22 to 40)
Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…
18 – Simple Minds – Glitterball
The first single from Simple Minds since April 1995 when “Hypnotised” alsomade No.18.
“Glitterball” is a bit of a disappointment and hasn’t received much airplay.
11 – Shed Seven – She Left Me On A Friday * !!!
What is anything but a disappointment though is the new Shed Seven singlewhich is right up there with the best stuff they’ve done including “Going ForGold”, “On Standby” and “Chasing Rainbows”, and deserves a Top 10 placing,especially the first line, “She left me on a Friday and ruined my weekend…”
5 – Cast from Casualty – Everlasting Love :O ===
BBC1’s Casualty used to be a fantastic programme in it’s early days but startedto go downhill from around 1993 when the 92/93 series ended with a show that’snever been repeated (and was greatly criticised) in which the whole hospitalburnt down, killing one of the doctors, and was just a load of frantic mayhemto get some ratings.
Since then, Charlie still only has 2 facial expressions, Baz came back andthey got married in an episode where a number of old faces reunited inc.Duffy, Ash and Megan.
This dire double-episode (which could easily have been trimmed to about anhour) culminated in the wedding party band disappearing, leaving the staffto step in and do a terrible version of “Everlasting Love”, fronted byreception girl Amy.
There’s one thing that really pisses me off about the programme though – whyis it that the staff feel morally obligated to dish out endless advice topeople with screwed-up lives when theirs are equally screwed-up? I, myself,have a job where I daily face people who have messed up lives, but I don’tfeel the same way and if they want to waste their time then I’ll let them geton with it.
2 – Natalie Imbruglia – Big Mistake
It’s difficult to work out if this track is a big mistake. It’s not very good,requiring the ex-Neighbours star to sing quietly for a while, occasionally haveher voice altered so it sound like it’s being broadcast from a bad radio,and then has her shouting out loud for the chorus.
The end result saw her looking rather uncomfortable when performing this songon the midweek Lottery show, and seems like an average Alanis-Morrissette-copywhich is only one step less-worse than Meredith Brooks.

This track was Ash‘s only single released last year and was the theme tune tothe new film from the writer/director/producer team behind Shallow Grave andTrainspotting. “A Life Less Ordinary” stars Ewan MacGregor as a kidnappertaking Cameron Diaz as his hostage and keeping her captive.
The single was also the first release featuring their new female guitarist.
