In the last chart of 1998, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, pickingout the Top 10 first. During 1999, I’ll be going through the list one by onestarting with the Top 10 in alphabetical order.
This week : 9 new entries, 1 chart entry, 1 climbers, 2 non-movers & 27 downers.CHART TIME !
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
9 new entries and 1 chart entry :
This is one of the few tunes to actually climb into the Top 40 to get aplacing and has had a lot of airplay on MTV and the radio. It’s not a badtune, but isn’t the most impressive since it’s the rapping that spoils it.
Without the rapping, those who saw the recent Guiness advert will remember itaccompanying the one where the old man swims for exactly 119.5 seconds as theperfect pint is scored and his brother and the town cheer him on. On TV it wasquite a short ad, but at the cinema it seemed to go on forever.
16 Planet Perfecto featuring Grace – Not Over Yet 99 * !!!It made No.6 in April 1995 in its original form, but still sounds brillianthere, mainly because it reminds me of early 80’s-style music. When are wegoing to hear something new from her though?
10 Travis – Why Does It Always Rain On Me? *I’ve never much cared for Travis, but this single has had a lot of airplayrecently and is a grower.
9 The Chemical Brothers – Let Forever Be *Decent dance tune which has a bizarre and effective promo video, and wasrecently used on BBC1’s trailers for the return of Grandstand, promising thatBBC1 was the place to see all the football action.
Note how those same trailers suddenly lost Des Lynam the minute he said hewas moving to ITV because he “felt like a change”.
2 (3) DJ Jurgen presents Alice Deejay – Better off Alone *This is one of those dance tunes, like ATB’s “9pm (Till I Come)”, which focusesmore on the tune than the lyrics and also a tune that I’ve heard many-a-timewithout knowing who it was, but then telling me wouldn’t have made much impactanyway.
A combination of a dance beat, minimal lyrics and a tune that sounds like acar alarm on the fritz and you’re all set for a Top 5 hit.
1 Ronan Keating – When You Say Nothing At All :O === *2nd Week at No.1*First solo single for the Boyzone frontman and it’s one of the love themesfrom the popular Hugh Grant film, Notting Hill, another being Elvis Costello’srecording of “She”, and it’s clear that Ronan’s looking for a solo careerin the way that he’s launched a single on his own, is looking to present TVseries, with one already under his belt, and he’s branching out on his own asmanager to another Oirish band, Westlife, even if all that he’s doing iscomplete crap.
This is the 21st single to go straight in at No.1.
If anyone knows of a good site for new release info, please let me know

Dominator’s Top 50 of 1998
33. Lucid – I Can’t Help MyselfAfter its release exactly a year ago when it made No.7 in August 98,it took a while before I got to hear it and it became a definite favourite ofmine. Very ambient and ethereal, this is the sort of thing you want playingin the clubs after a few Diamond White’s have been sunk…
It was followed this year in February when “Crazy” made No.14 but I haven’theard that one.
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
Bye for now,
