Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

14 Hinda Hicks – I Wanna Be Your Lady

I didn’t think much of her last single “If You Want Me” (No.25, March 98)which stayed in the charts for a week, but since recent endless play onthe excellent Manchester station Galaxy 102 FM it’s grown on me.

I haven’t heard this new one much so when I do perhaps it’ll grow on me,although I’d prefer it if that honour went to Hinda herself 🙂

    4 Placebo – Pure Morning * !!!

Now this is an absolute work of pure genius. Despite a No.30 hit in Sept 96with “Teenage Angst”, Placebo didn’t come to the fore until February 97 whenthey reached No.4 with “Nancy Boy”, but things slipped a bit when “BruisePristine” spent a week in the charts at No.14 in May 97.

“Pure Morning” is a loud, raucous noise which gets better with every secondthat goes by and with a promo video that is very bizarre, featuring singerBrian Moloko throwing himself off the roof of a building…almost.

2 Sash featuring Tina Cousins – Mysterious Times

Another Sash single. Another No.2 hit. Not bad but a bit on the dull side.

    1 (NEW) Boyzone – No Matter What :O === *1st Week at No.1*

No matter what Boyzone seem to release it goes straight in at No.1 these days.Sometimes it’s not too bad, sometimes it really sucks and this one falls intothe latter category.

My girlfriend loves it but this twee ballad sung in a goody-goody style bymore than one member of the band just grates like hell!

This is the seventh single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. B*witched – C’est La Vie
  • 2. Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds – 3 Lions 98
  • 3. Billie – Because We Want To
  • 4. Another Level – Freak Me
  • 5. Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground
  • 6. Spice Girls – Viva Forever
  • 7. Boyzone – No Matter What

    Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997

    33. Natalie Imbruglia – Torn

“Torn” was the debut single for the ex-Neighbours star where she played BethBrennan, then with long hair, who left the show after her character marriedBrad Willis, and made the charts in November last year.

She quit to start a singing career, and it’s taken about three years, but thefirst results has struck a No.2 hit instantly, even though it was originallydue out two weeks beforehand. Perhaps a good thing they did put it back, probably because the Spice Girls put their record back to the same week. Theycould’ve had a No.1 if they hadn’t reckoned with a force stronger than theSpice Girls, namely Aqua.

For her next single, Big Mistake (No.2, Mar 98), it’s difficult to work out ifthat track was a big mistake. It’s not very good, requiring the ex-Neighboursstar to sing quietly for a while, occasionally have her voice altered so itsound like it’s being broadcast from a bad radio, and then has her shoutingout loud for the chorus.

The end result saw her looking rather uncomfortable when performing this songon the midweek Lottery show, and seems like an average Alanis-Morrissette-copywhich is only one step less-worse than Meredith Brooks.

Her third single, Wishing I Was There (No.19, June 98), wasn’t really beengiven much airplay or promotion and isn’t as poppy as the others, but is alot better.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
