Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

66 Alfie – A Word in Your EarSoftly softly does it for this latest track. Almost too softly thoughand if they’re not careful they’ll slip into the Simon & Garfunkel mode, not that that’s a bad thing.

37 Cornershop – Lessons Learnt from Rocky I to Rocky IIIThe one about the “Overgrown Supershake”, but it’s not very good.

34 Dandy Warhols – Get Off * !!!I really thought that after the success of “Bohemian Like You”, after themobile phone advert, that this would also be a storming success and set themon the right path, but sadly it looks like full-time chart success will eludethem for a while.

“Get Off” is another excellent rock tune with a video that reminds me of thefirst scene in “The Fifth Element”, in places.

32 Steve Balsamo – Sugar For The Soul :O ===What a terrible track this is, although it’s the sort of thing that mighthave sounded rather good in the mid-80s.

He looks a bit like Michael J Fox at the time but with a beard, and this singlehas been plugged around everywhere for the whole of the last week. I knew itwouldn’t work and it’s a very lame record. It’s also incredibly predictable.

28 Gomez – Shot ShotHmmm… maybe it’ll take a few more listens but on first hearing this israther a raucous track without much sense of direction, as well as beingincredibly short at around 2.5 minutes. Not a patch on classics like”Whipping Piccadilly” or “Get Myself Arrested”.

19 Hundred Reasons – If I CouldA good rock tune that gets a fair bit of airplay on MTV2, but not one thatparticularly stands out from the crowd.

6 Rik Waller – I Will Always Love You :O ===I hated the Whitney cover, although at least the Dolly Parton original hadsome emotion. However, Fat Rik’s cover version is dire in the extreme and I’veonly heard a snippet of it.

If he can sing, then this is not the song for him and the video is veryunflattering.

1 Will Young – Anything is Possible/Evergreen *2nd Week at No.1*

The Pop Idol winner and record-breaker having sold 1.1 million copies ofthis single in its first week. It’s a bit too twee for my tastes.

His cover of “Light My Fire” was interesting though.

It’s now been revealed that Will is gay. Big deal. However, it does mean thata whole new army of fans will buy this single.

This is the 5th single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. Aaliyah – More Than a Woman
  • 2. George Harrison – My Sweet Lord (R)
  • 3. Enrique Iglesias – Hero
  • 4. Westlife – World of Our Own
  • 5. Will Young – Anything is Possible/Evergreen

Dominator’s Top 50 of 2001After last week’s look back at all the Top 50 tracks of last year, this week sees the list of my Top 50 of 2001. From next week I shallbegin my look back at them.

11. Alien Ant Farm – Smooth Criminal

Their first major hit in the UK, making No.3 in September last year.

While the self-proclaimed King of Pop’s comeback stalled somewhat with a No.2first single and another one which flopped, by comparison, this nu-metal bandkick out with a perfect rock version of his 1988 hit that appeared in theMoonwalker film.

With moonwalking and general Wacko Jacko pisstakes during the video it’severything you’d imagine if you thought about a frenetic rock version of thetrack.

It was followed up with “Movies” (No.5, Feb 2002) and that’s good too, butthe album’s rather a disappointment.
