    CHART TIME !

  • (* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

9 new entries this week, 2 climbers (Robbie Williams from 7 to 6, and anew No.1), 2 non-movers (Verve at 32, and Propellorheads at 40), and 27going down.

Big fallers include Allure from 12 to 19, and 2Pac from 21 to 35.

Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    30 Family Stand – Ghetto Heaven * (R)

In March 1990, the Family Stand made No.10 with this sombre, but excellent, effort, and to date it’s been their only hit, so quite why it’s been re-releasedis anyone’s guess…unless it’s been badly remixed in which case I haven’theard the latest version.

    20 Rialto – Untouchable * !!! (R)

Finally a Top 20 hit for Rialto who’s only other hit to date was thealso excellent, “Monday Morning 5:19”, which made No.37 in November lastyear.

This single was released in June last year, and didn’t do a light, butat least things have been put to rights this time round..providing it atleast climbs into the Top 10…

    13 Queen – No-One But You/Tie Your Mother Down

With a song intended for Brian May‘s solo album, this dreary ballad wasdredged out and has vocals from both Brian May and Roger Taylor. I presumethey felt they should record it as “Queen” as it has the line, “Only the gooddie young”, thus making a reference to Freddie Mercury.

It’s their first new single since November 96 when “You Don’t Fool Me” madeNo.17.

    12 Bernard Butler – Stay *

Ex-Suede star goes solo and makes a superb debut single. Now if it couldjust go Top 10…

    11 Clock – That’s The Way (I Like It) :O ===

AAARRGH! Who the hell keeps buying their records?

    2 Bamboo – Bamboogie *

A fast dance-reworking of KC & The Sunshine Band‘s “Get Down Tonight”which made No.21 in 1975. Very good too, and I won’t say that about many dancerecords.

    1 (2) All Saints – Never Ever *1st Week at No.1*

As Perfect Day slips to No.4, the All Saints finally climb into the top slotafter much upping and downing prior to Xmas.

Only the second single for this all-girl band, this ballad has been in chartsfor 9 weeks now, so for it to go up and down and climb into the No.1 slot, especially 2 weeks after Christmas is something entirely unprecedented for theUK charts thesedays.

Perhaps we now have a successor to the girl-band crown for the media to harpon about instead of the Spice Girls.

Top 40 ALBUM chart analysis :

No new entries in the Top 10 this week, but the Top 5 keeps the Verve atthe top followed by All Saints, Robbie Williams (climbing from 12 to 3),Spice Girls and Texas.

As Robbie Williams has climbed to No.3, this is the first time his album hasactually seen the inside of the Top 10, no doubt spurred on by the success ofthe current single “Angels”.

    Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997

    3. David Bowie – Little Wonder

It’s a far cry from “Ashes to Ashes” or “Let’s Dance”, but each set of Bowiesongs has its own period. Those songs still impress me as much now as they didthen, but it doesn’t harm too much to try a different musical style, althoughI can do without most of the output from Tin Machine.

“Little Wonder” is a repetitive almost-techno track, and in the hands of anyother person it probably wouldn’t get a second glance, but for some reasonit seems to work, and for someone who’s gone into their sixth decade he’sentitled to put out what he likes.

However, I wouldn’t like to see him continue down this road forever. After all,Everything But the Girl abandoned the sort of music they were best at for therevenue that dance music brings in, and while their efforts worked well atfirst, their constant reliance upon the style has ruined everything, as theirconcert I saw in 1996 proved.

This single made No.14 last February, and was followed by “Dead Man Walking”which made No.32 in April.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
