In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 19 new entries, 1 chart entry, 2 climbers, 1 non-movers &17 downers
It’s goodbye to : Michelle Gayle (40), James (39), Spice Girls (38), D:Ream (37), Texas (36), Tin Tin Out featuring Tony Hadley (35), U2 (34), The Notorious BIG (32), Jay-Z featuring Foxy Brown (31), Prefab Sprout (30), Hurricane No.1 (29), 3 Colours Red (28), Daft Punk (27), Nuyorican Soul featuring Jocelyn Brown (26), Goodfellaz (25), Gene (22), Lightning Seeds (21), Paul McCartney (19), Dru Hill (16), Mansun (15).
And hello to : Propellorheads (40), Babybird (37), Laurie Johnson/London Big Band (36), Embrace (34), Paul Young (33), Sinead O’Connor (28), My Life Story (27), Suggs and Co. featuring Chelsea Team (26), OTT (24), Space Brothers (23), Delirious? (20), CJ Bolland (19), Mary J Blige (15), Katrina and the Waves (13), Brownstone (12), Eels (9), Primal Scream (8), North and South (7), Damage (3), Olive (1).

(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
19 new entries this week, plus one chart entry! I think that’s a record, and avery poor showing indeed. It’s not a joke anymore. More testament to the factthat something needs to be done about the rigging of the chart by the recordcompanies!
I’ve mentioned this a few times now, but it’s just getting worse and worse. While the chart does reflect the sales accurately, those at fault are the shopsand the record companies, because when the record companies sell singles to theshops, they’re sold at just over UKP 2.00 apiece, but for established bands, the shops are given a couple of extra freebies for EACH single sold : 3 forthe price of one. No wonder they sell for 99p or 1.99 in the first week out, hence gaining high chart entries. That’s the sort of practice that needs to bestopped.
This practice is also causing massive fallers in their second week out. Some of this week’s biggest fallers including the Seahorses from 3 to 11,George Michael from 2 to 14, Red 5 from 11 to 25, Foo Fighters from 12 to 30,and Ant & Dec from 14 to 35.
I mistaken said that it was on their third week out James fell from 12 to 39,but that was only their second week in the charts. Ridiculous!
Miraculously, this week we actually have two singles climbing WITHIN the Top 10,and a record climbing from outside the Top 40 into the Top 20!
37 Babybird – Cornershop *
Has Babybird’s bubble burst? They were brought into the big time when theirbiggest hit came last year into the Top 5 with “You’re Gorgeous” (which Isoon took a dislike to), to be followed by “Candy Girl” which was an excellentlaid-back record, but after charting at No.12 fell to 38 the week after.
Now the position of this one doesn’t bode well, even though out of all the400 songs that Stephen Jones has written, this was the first.
36 Laurie Johnson/London Big Band – Theme from the Professionals
Well someone must’ve bought it…
33 Paul Young – I Wish You Love
Paul Young‘s return to the charts is a very average affair, and as such hashad a lukewarm reception by the singles chart-buying public it seems.
28 Sinead O’Connor – Gospel Oak EP (This Is To Mother You)
First single from Sinead in two years since she sang a duet with ShaneMcGowan (Haunted, No.30), and the main track on this EP is a ballad, “This IsTo Mother You” which is actually quite good.
Sinead seems to have calmed down her image, and now actually has hair in theright place. The video is a bit weird, all being shot in a single take, but isthat Kris Kristofferson that she’s in bed with??
27 My Life Story – Strumpet *
My Life Story are an excellent band, and so is this single, but I’ve only heardit once, so can’t remember how it goes.
24 OTT – Forever Girl
A Gary Barlow cover version?? 🙂
13 (50) Katrina and the Waves – Love Shine a Light
Seems to be a year for bizarre events. First the Labour (spit!) party get in,then I won a tenner on the lottery for the first time EVER, and then there’sa chart entry for the first time in years for Katrina and the Waves whohad a landslide victory at the Eurovision Song Contest on May 3rd when theybeat Ireland by a mile with “Love Shine A Light” which is quite an averagesong, but is getting plenty of airplay.
9 Eels – Susan’s House *
Following their first single, “Novacaine for the Soul” which made No.10 earlierthis year, Eels have quite a weird record out which is partly spoken, and whenI first heard it I was sure it was Sting, but it’s not.
7 North and South – I’m a Man Not a Boy :O ===
This has got to be one of the sorriest efforts ever for a single release.Like Ant and Dec started off as ‘PJ and Duncan’ from BBC1’s Byker Grove series,so North and South have started off from another kids show, BBC1’s No Sweat.
Now, at least Ant and Dec had more than one song, but whenever I’ve had themisfortune to tune into “No Sweat”, I’m left wondering what the show isactually about as it seems to be nothing but this group singing the same songover and over again, and I doubt very much whether any of the band are actuallyplaying their instruments, or if the lead singer is doing the singing.
Plus, the song is appalling, and is little more than an endless chorus.Whoever out there in the world thinks the BBC makes the best TV programmesneeds their head read.
4 (7) Shola Ama – You Might Need Somebody
Bucking the trend of the singles charts, this one goes up AGAIN!
3 Damage – Wonderful Tonight :O ===
After the dire, “Forever”, I actually began to like “Love Guaranteed”, theirfollow-up, but they were clearly lying in wait before striking with thisatrocity.
Eric Clapton is among my favourite artists, and no doubt a number of people havecovered this song in one form or another, but nothing has ever come close toreaching the original’s perfection…and this is no exception.
2 (4) Cardigans – Lovefool (Remix) (R) *
Also defying the laws of the charts these days, the Cardigans have climbed to 2.
Now PLEASE will someone re-released their best ever track, “Sick and Tired”.
1 Olive – You’re Not Alone (R) *1st Week at No.1*
Congratulations to a band whose first Top 40 hit is a No.1, although it’s notthat difficult these days even if this is a record worthy of the top slot.
Previously, this single only made No.42 in September last year, and its followup“Miracle” only made No.41 in March this year. At least things are put right toa point, although with the way the charts are run now, even Eddie (The Eagle)Edwards could get a No.1 on his first week out…

Elsewhere in the Top 40 album chart is a man who visited the Little Chef wheremy girlfriend is the Assistant Manageress on Sunday 11th May, as he appearedon ITV’s “The Time, The Place”, the day after. She didn’t get me an autograph, but anyhow, the man in question is David Essex (A Night At The Movies, 21).
The only other new entry is The Wannadies (Bagsy Me, 37).
20. Dodgy – In A Room
Despite having two other bigger hits last year : Good Enough (August, 4),and If You’re Thinking Of Me (November, 11), it was in June that “In a Room”made No.12 and became the best of the three for me, as it worked on many levels, with both fast and slow parts, and still gets many an airplay today.
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the list, just mailme at Charts Request to tell me, but please specify whether you want the music charts and/or the widescreen video and laserdisc lists.
Bye for now,
