In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 13 new entries, 1 climbers, 2 non-movers & 24 downers
It’s goodbye to : Travis (40), Bee Gees (39), Kula Shaker (38), Reef (36), Damage (35), Disco Citizens (34), BBE (33), Queen Latifah (31), Puff Johnson (29), Hondy (26), Luscious Jackson (25), Backstreet Boys (24), Sara Parker (22).
And hello to : Up Yer Ronson featuring Mary Pearce (32), MC Lyte featuring Xscape (27), Bryan Adams (22), Natural Born Grooves (21), Bruce Springsteen (17), Erykah Badu (12), Texas (10), Suede (9), Kavana (8), Shola Ama (7), The Course (5), Orbital (3) and Blur (2).
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
22 Bryan Adams – 18 Til I Die
Another single from Mr. Adams, and another reason why his career is just sinkingdown the pan. Around 8 or 9 years ago he used to make good records, and nowit’s just throwaway “rock”.
17. Bruce Springsteen – Secret Garden (R) * !!!
Exactly 2 years ago this week, this single went in at No.44 and never madethe Top 40. Taken from the “Ballad of Tom Joad” album, this single has beenre-released and is a hit as it is the love theme from the latest Tom CruiseOscar-nominated film, “Jerry Maguire”.
10. Texas – Halo *
The second single from their “White on Blonde” album, and another Top 10 hitfor Texas who have had terrific success with their comeback after “Say WhatYou Want” was plugged endlessly by Chris Evans when he had a morning show onRadio 1.
9. Suede – Lazy *
Fourth single from their current album, Lazy scores another Top 10 hitfollowing “Trash”, “Beautiful Ones” and my favourite out of the current crop,“Saturday Night”.
8. Kavana – MFEO :O ===
The latest single from the young gay pin-up, Kavana, has a title which standsfor “Made For Each Other”, but it’s just another slice of pap pop that Icouldn’t care less for. Avoid.
7. Shola Ama – You Might Need Somebody *
I don’t know who Shola Ama is but she’s done a very good cover version ofthe old Randy Crawford song, which made No.11 in 1981 inbetween “One Day I’llFly Away” and “Rainy Night in Georgia”.
Perhaps the Fugees should take a note out of her book, and only do coverswithout the need for all that “One time, two time” shit in the middle..
3. Orbital – The Saint
Instrumental reworking of the “Saint” theme tune, to accompany the new filmstarring Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue, at UK cinemas from April 18th.
2. Blur – Song 2 *
Second single from Blur’s “Blur” album, and more coincidences abound as itgoes straight in at No.2. Four minute song with 1:58 of heavy metal in themiddle. Excellent.
1 R. Kelly – I Believe I Can Fly *2nd Week at No.1*
Still there, and still taken from the hit film, “Space Jam”, but who’ll beNo.1 next week? No Doubt’s next single, “Just a Girl” is out…

This excellent departure for David Bowie, was a colaboration with the Pet ShopBoys, and was performed at the 1996 Brit Awards ceremony.
“Hallo Spaceboy” was Bowie’s only Top 40 hit last year, making No.12 at theend of February. The follow-up, “Telling Lies”, was first released on theinternet, before coming out as a CD single in November, making No. 83.
